Last year, Hellickson had same thing done in late January and didn't pitch until July. I wouldn't expect McGee until the end of May.

Do you think he'll be closing when he returns?

Why did he wait until December to have the surgery?

^this. seems like they could have done it right after the season ended; then he'd be ready for the upcoming one.

Every team tries the rest & rehab route before surgery

but it hardly ever works, does it? maybe you just don't hear as much about the ones where it does...

It doesn't, but surgery is no guarantee either.

So who closes to start the year? Boxberger was tremendous last year but will they give him a shot?

Why would Tampa trade Myers? It seems awfully early to give up on him.

Probably because they realize they don't have much of a farm system behind him and are looking at a rebuild with the AL East getting stronger around them.

There are concerns about Myers from the neck up

I considered that as a possibility and it still doesn't seem to make sense to trade him. In order to be competitive Tampa needs Myers to be an offensive force. If Myers develops they can still contend. If they trade him for prospects they are throwing in the towel for the foreseeable future. He was the same nut job when Kc converted him to the outfield, when he was traded to Tampa and when he was rookie of the year. This guy can be an impact hitter. What's the down side Colby Rasmus?

Myers' downside isn't the problem here. The problem is the lack of upside the reported trade has for Tampa. Myers getting out of Tampa is probably the best thing for his career. It's pretty clear why Madden wanted out, whoever is making all these deals is sinking the Rays for the next 10 years.
