Deep ballot -- I can see Marvin Miller, Joe Torre, Tony La Russa and George Steinbrenner all making it in.

Eligible candidates include players who appeared in at least 10 consecutive major league seasons, who are not on Major League Baseball’s ineligible list and have been retired for 21 or more seasons (those whose last playing appearance was no later than 1992); managers and umpires with 10 or more years in baseball and retired for at least five years, with candidates who are 65 years or older eligible six months from the date of the election following retirement; and Executives with 10 consecutive years in baseball and retired for at least five years, with active executives 65 years or older are eligible for consideration.

The finalists are voted upon by a 16-member committee and need to receive at least 75% to be elected. The 16-member Hall of Fame Board-appointed electorate charged with the review of the Expansion Era ballot features: Hall of Fame members Rod Carew, Carlton Fisk, Whitey Herzog, Tommy Lasorda, Joe Morgan, Paul Molitor, Phil Niekro and Frank Robinson; major league executives Paul Beeston (Blue Jays), Andy MacPhail, Dave Montgomery (Phillies) and Jerry Reinsdorf (White Sox); and historians Steve Hirdt (Elias Sports Bureau), Bruce Jenkins (San Francisco Chronicle), Jack O’Connell (BBWAA) and Jim Reeves (retired, Fort Worth Star-Telegram).

I'd like to see Tommy John get in, if for no other reason than he gave me one of my greatest baseball laughs the day he was awarded three errors on one play.

edit: I just googled it to make sure my memory was good on this & read the following quote: John was told after the Yankees' 16-3 win that he had tied a mark set by James Bentley Seymour of the 1898 New York Giants of a pitcher making three errors in one inning. "Knew him well," John said. "Pitched against him in the Eastern League."

Is this Torre the manager or Torre the player? I think he should be in the HOF if you can count them both together. 90% of a HOF player and 70% of a HOF manager? Something like that?

here's the rule from the HOF site:
(B) Those whose careers entailed involvement in multiple categories will be considered for their overall contribution to the game of Baseball; however, the specific category in which these individuals shall be considered will be determined by the role in which they were most prominent. In those instances when a candidate is prominent as both a player and as a manager, executive or umpire, the BBWAA-appointed Historical Overview Committee shall determine that individual's category as a player, as a manager or as an umpire or as an executive/pioneer. Those designated as players must fulfill the requirements of 6 (A).


So in other words, the "overall contribution" of Torre and Martin is considered as a whole, but they both got on the ballot because of their managerial work.

Would anyone be unhappy if only players and managers were elected to the Hall of Fame?

Obviously, if dopes like Tom Yawkey and Bowie Kuhn are in, Marvin Miller is far more deserving. But are any of them why we drive to Cooperstown?

George Steinbrenner had a lot of fans backing his induction this year, but he fell short as well.
