  • Khris "not Chris" Davis

Since taking Ryan Braun's roster spot and getting a look in LF for Milwaukee, Khris Davis has been quietly putting up good numbers.

In 37 at bats over 17 games since being called up, the 25 year old Davis is hitting .324/.390/.784 with 5 hr, 12 rbi, & 11 r (thru Friday).

He's been platooning so far, but he may be winning the 2013 LF job soon, if he hasn't already. I know it's a small sample size, but he's hit for decent power and average in the minors. Supposedly, his defense is poor and Braun has been blocking him in LF until now. He may be worth a flyer if you need an OF.

With the black hole the Brewers have had at 1B all year and Corey Hart physically unreliable and an unlikely-to-return free agent after the season, wouldn't it make sense to move either Davis or Braun to 1B next year?

There was a lot of talk about Davis getting a crack at 1B this spring, but it sounds like they gave him a look and he was a butcher there. RF could also be an option (if the Brewers decide to trade Aoki) but it's another position that Davis wouldn't be able to field.

So the options for Davis getting playing time next year seem to come down to:
      1) Braun moves to 1B
      2) Braun moves to RF
      3) Davis gets traded
      4) Braun gets traded
      5) Both leagues choose to have designated hitters

It's difficult to fathom unless you watch him, but Davis is even worse in LF than Braun was his first couple years. I can't imagine him in RF, and surrounding Gomez with Braun and Davis would be like playing with 2 OFs fielding - and Gomez would be 1.5 of them. If I were Davis, I'd be begging to go to winter ball and really work at learning 1B. The Brewers don't have any great options there, so he'd actually have a shot at winning the position if he improves to just a below average fielder.
I'm just here for the baseball.

Both leagues going to DH makes too much sense....it will never happen

Not always. Pitchers should be able to help their team every night. If a pitcher can pinch hit or pinch run when a team needs them, why not?

That could be Rick Ankiel's next stage of his career. Become a L(H)OOGY and a pinch-hitter.

On the contrary, it is an integral part of the real game. Having a pitcher who can hit (Greinke, etc.) becomes an advantage, as it should be, and having a miserable hitting pitcher (Tommy Hanson would have become the worst hitter of all-time if he had stayed in the NL one more year) is the disadvantage that it should be. Yes, most pitchers can't hit well, but I don't see why that is a reason not to make them do it. I find the AB's of pitchers plenty interesting. Certainly more interesting that watching Paul Janish hit, lol.

WHAT? You don't find watching Janish, with his .213/.284/.287 career marks, fascinating?

If team "kangaroo courts" can fine hitters for making outs against non-pitchers in blowouts and fine pitchers for allowing hits to other pitchers, they should fine anyone who gives up a hit to Janish. At the GASP, there used to be a mass exodus to the restrooms when he batted for the Reds. "Nothing's gonna happen, so this is a good time to..."

I find it funny that the Braves recently picked up Elliott Johnson, who appears to be, well, Paul Janish, and we already had Janish. But then, with Uggla on the DL and Johnson day-to-day, we managed to play both of them on Sunday. That was essentially putting three pitchers in the lineup. On the other hand, with them at third and second and Simmons at short, we probably had the best infield defense in baseball.

Sounds like he and the Brewers are now open to giving him a shot at 1B or RF next year.

"Brewers could move Ryan Braun to right field

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin acknowledged Tuesday that the club has discussed moving Ryan Braun to right field in order to make room for Khris Davis in left field.
Davis has limited range, but the Brewers want to find a way to get him into the lineup after he batted .279/.353/.596 with 11 home runs and 27 RBI over 153 plate appearances as a rookie this year. Moving Braun to right field would make Norichika Aoki the odd man out, but there would be plenty of interest in him on the trade market given his team-friendly 2014 option. It's worth noting that the Brewers haven't discussed the idea with Braun yet, so it's no sure thing."

Braun would be wise to just keep his mouth shut, grab his glove, and jog out to right field when they ask him. After all of the poor decisions he has made, he needs to kiss a lot of asses for a long time to get past 2013.
