  • Best team ERA

As we near the break, what team ERA leads your league? I've never been one to build around starting pitching in my NL-only 4x4, and I really didn't this year either, other than keeping a $23 Clayton Kershaw in the final year of his contract, but my team ERA as of this morning was 2.994 (with a 1.1074 WHIP which also leads that category). The next closest is 3.241 followed by 3.506. We have never had a team finish with an ERA under 3.00 in this league.

The rest of my staff after Kershaw is made-up of A.J. Burnett ($1 keeper), Matt Garza ($6, Carlos Villanueva filled-in until Garza returned), Mike Leake ($1), Francisco Liriano ($1), Travis Wood ($1, recently traded and slot now occupied by Drew Storen), John Axford ($20, second biggest mistake of the auction), Edward Mujica (free agent pickup to replace the biggest mistake of the auction, $19 on Jason Motte) and then a hodge-podge of Mike Adams/Stephen Fife/Chris Capuano/Brandon McCarthy in my last slot.

    The top three ERA's in my NL-only 5x5 are 3.443, 3.458 and 3.516

    The top three ERA's in my AL-only 5x5 are 3.275, 3.541 and 3.682

I was ahead in ERA going into last night but Samardzija's less than desirable performance sent me down to 2nd. First place right now is 3.301. The best all-time in our 12-team NL only was 3.222.

Talk about stratified, these are the top 4 from PONY (15-team mixed)

        Team ERA Pts Dif
        Junk Dogz 3.061 15.0 0.0
        Lildogs 2 3.263 14.0 0.0
        Ducks of Hazzard 3.414 13.0 0.0
        The Court Street Shuffle 3.554 12.0 0.0

It would take a major upheaval for any of those 4 to change positions.

12-team NL leader ERA is 3.09, with starting pitchers Bumgarner-Leake-Fernandez-Zimmerman-Stults.

Master of the obvious warning: to do well in ERA, it helps that your ace pitches reasonably up to expectations rather than bombing unexpectedly (he has Bumgarner, not Cain) and that at least somebody does much better in ERA than anyone would expect (Leake 2.69 ERA after 4.58 ERA last year and 3.88 ERA the year prior)

Our leader in 12-team NL only is at 2.956 with 1.1107, would be a nice battle with Dane's team.

it's kiddie corps of Harvey, Corbin, SMiller, Cingrani, Wheeler, Rosenthal, with RSoriano and the just-today traded Nolasco and de la Rosa (for incoming Parnell and Slowey)

12-team NL-only: 3.009 (Chatwood, Lee, Liriano, Locke, Ryu, Strasburg, Stults)
In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

                4.572.

oh wait, that's my team's ERA ... and I'm in last (rebuilding year).
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

I'm 2nd with 3.18 while the leader is at 3.08. He has Verlander, Scherzer, Bumgarner, Kuroda, Travis Wood, Phil Hughes, AJ Burnett, Kyle Kendrick. He also has Garrit Cole but hasn't started him yet. When you check the stats of when they were active Verlander has the 2nd highest ERA on his team ahead of only Kendrick. Hughes has an ERA of 4.55 but it is 2.45 when starting for his team.

He also is in 1st with a 1.108 WHIP to my 1.141 in 2nd.

in my 12 team NL only, I'm in first in ERA at 2.901, The Dane is in 2nd at 2.929, 3rd is 3.444!

I have Kershaw, Leake and Gaudin as SP, and a bunch of sweet MR like Rex Brothers, Alfredo Simon and Justin Wilson, I need Ks and Ws, so I recently traded Mujica and Grilli for Gallardo and Greinke since I can probably only really lose 1 point in ERA and have an 11 saves lead over number 2.....

Our league NL 4x4 one team is 1st in all 4 categories:
                          3.06 1.165 59 W 56 Saves
Strasburg (Keeper $15), Harvey $9 (was a Minor league keeper), Minor (was a keeper $1), Leake (FAAB pickup), Tejeran (keeper $5), Chacin $1 (was a keeper $1, but traded him away a month ago)
He is in 1st overall by 11 points.

That's actually not much, .03 in WHIP could be surpassed with one bad outing.

12-team NL-only: 3.016, 3.338, 3.413 (me!) - team in 1st has Liriano, Locke, and Ryu leading the way and traded away Zimmerman a while back
10-team AL-only: 3.50, 3.75, 3.84 - the American League is rough on pitchers it seems
