  • Blown HR call in A's/Indians game

Olney is calling for Selig to overturn it and let them finish the game today.

I think that's the right thing to do, too, but I have zero faith in Selig that he'd do the right thing.

If Selig does overturn it, which is incredibly unlikely, it would set a terrible precedent for baseball.

Pinetar gate was a rules interpretation incident. This would be a unique experience if (and lord know Selig will kick this can down the line) if it happens

The man continues to employ Angel Hernandez so he's clearly not extremely concerned with accuracy.

I guess I hadn't considered that distinction. I was thinking of pinetar as the precedent.

Also I suppose if they'd even consider this, they'd have done so for the botched perfect game.

There have been so many missed calls like this over the years, some in the playoffs or WS. I pull for the A's but arbitrarily overturning this one now would be a horrible decision. It would have to be and addendum that takes effect next year to be fair. AFAIK when they rewrote the rules to incorporate replays, they didn't put a mechanism in place to address what to do if/when it later becomes apparent the umps completely blew the call even with clear video evidence.

Jim McKean, former supervisor of umps, just did an awesome interview on MLB Radio. Said (and data agrees with this) that Hernandez is a terrific ball/strike but but situational management is not his strong suit which is why he is not a crew chief

While MLB employs the umps, once they're hired, it's almost impossible to get rid of them, thanks to the Umpire union.

Probably not - the outcome of that game wasn't clearly affected by that call.

calling him "clearly out" is a stretch. i was watching the game, and even on the super slo-mo it was bang-bang, and indistinguishable from a tie, which goes to the runner. even the rockies announcers couldn't make a case against the call.

just to clarify, MLB rules do not identify a tie as a possibility.
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.
