  • Who to Drop (NL-Only)

10 Team 5x5 NL-Only Keeper league, with 25 man rosters. Between injuries and poor performance, my team has been hugely disappointing thus far, as I was expecting to compete and currently sit in 9th place. I'm trying to make room for a free agent pickup or two, but I'm not completely sure who to let go to open up the spots.

The potential drop candidates (all currently in their first year) in no particular order are:

Brandon McCarthy ($15) (peripherals look much better than the results, so I'm still hoping he'll improve)
    Dillon Gee ($8)
    Wily Peralta ($2)
    Sean Marshall ($2)
Frank Francisco ($5) (should be back any day now)
Yasmani Grandal ($1) (due back from suspension towards the end of the month I believe)
    Cory Luebke ($3)
    Anthony Rendon ($5)
Rob Brantly ($2) (would leave me without a second active catcher until Grandal gets back)

Do one or two stand out clearly as the best (worst?) choices to drop? I'm trying to improve for this year, but don't want to be dropping someone who could be a keeper next season, as if I stay this far down for another month or so, I'm going to have to start thinking about looking to next year.

    Thanks for your help.

I'd probably drop either McCarthy or Marshall.

I would drop Gee or Marshall
After former Broncos quarterback Brian Griese sprained his ankle and said he was tripped on the stairs of his home by his golden retriever, Bella: “The dog stood up on his hind legs and gave him a push? You might want to get rid of that dog, or put him in the circus, one of the two.”

Marshall seems like the easy first choice

Rendon, Luebke, and Grandal look like the best keepers, so I wouldn't drop them.

10 team league...I imagine you could still find a good solid safe middle reliever later if you needed to in the future, so I'd drop Marshall. Or Gee; I can't imagine anyone would rush to pick him up given his performance so far and he never has seemed like a high-upside guy to me.

If your league keeper rules allow it, I'd be tempted to drop Gee, then try to pick him up for $1 whenever you are able, dropping Marshall as Gee could be a potential keeper at $1.

-McCarthy is not rosterable on a competitive team atm.
-Marshall brings only ratios to the table and be dropped. He was worth drafting when he was going to back up Broxton but that time has past by.
-Gee at home today is a good play but then can be dropped. He's pretty much just a streamer until he becomes more reliable.
-Frank Francisco as the setup guy is going to have minimal value and can be dropped for a better option (unless you feel a Parnell implosion is on the horizon).

              I'd keep the rest.

                - I'd probably drop Francisco - he's never had an ERA under 3 and Parnell's been great so far
                - McCarthy still has plenty of upside playing in the NL West, I think he'll come around
                - All the hitters could be good keepers along with Luebke
                - Marshall could get some vulture wins being the 7th inning guy and will provide quality ratios
                - Gee is probably my 2nd choice although his last two years were pretty decent
                - Peralta is brutal right now but could turn it around although his K-rate is disturbing

Thanks for the replies! Marshall seems to be the consensus pick, likely followed by Gee.

James33 - Our minimum FAAB bid is $5, so players can't be dropped and picked up for anything less than that.

I'd say Frankie Frank, but given your avatar, you may be reluctant to drop a Met. if that's the case, drop Marshall. I get the feeling here in Cincy that Dusty doesn't quite trust him enough to give him a lot of high-leverage opportunities.
