  • Any reason to believe Marcel Ozuna will produce? Robbie Erlin?

He is in the lineup tonight in place of Stanton and is 1-3. I have a couple blanks in my roster due to injuries, so I have an opportunity to either insert him in the lineup or wait [preserving his rookie status]. Any suggestions?
I have the same scenario with pitcher Robbie Erlin, but I am leaning toward waiting on him to see if he actually pitches meaningful innings before I dump his rookie eligibility.

Erlin yes, Ozuna no (not this year at least). Agree with elD that Erlin could be affected near-term by being slotted into the bullpen (and being jerked around by the padres).

Please clarify, Sharky? Are you suggesting activating Erlin, but not Osuna? Or, the reverse?

Erlin allowed a mopup 2-run HR to septugenarian Cody Ransom tonight; not sure he gets the mound every 5th day anytime soon

Ozuna - if you need real wild cards and have to reach, ok to go for it. but don't get overconfident...

That is my read, too. I would hate to start his clock and have to protect him again next year, but this time as one of my actives instead of rookie roster. Ozuna I don't think I will mind: either he is a keeper next year or he isn't.I may move him, too, if he looks promising for something I really need later.

I picked this cat up yesterday....here's hoping he stays at the minimum, moderately warm....

The question I have about Ozuna is his role once Stanton returns. Stanton will obviously return to right field. Ruggiano is in center and Pierre in left. If he continues to hit Ozuna should probably move to left. Are the Marlins prepared to trade Pierre or release him this early? I am not sure if Ozuna is capable of playing center plus Ruggiano has been one of the better players on the Marlins this season.

And don't forget it was kind of a surprise that they skipped over Yelich to get at Ozuna. And Silverio is in line there somewhere and would likely have been called had he not been injured. Unless Ozuna goes absolutely Trout all over NL pitching, he's down when Stanton returns and maybe even sooner.

The decision to call up Ozuna rather than Yelich has been explained by saying that Yelich started slow and Ozuna was hot but might be because they don't consider Ozuna a prosepct. If the team doesn't consider Ozuna a prospect they wouldn't care if his arbitration period started earlier since they would simply dump him rather than pay him. The same cannot be said of Yelich.

Yelich was not promoted because he had been recovering from a foot injury and had started slowly (he has since gotten hot at AA). Ozuna is considered to be a big time power prospect...not as good a hitter as Yelich and not as much power as Stanton, but definitely as having 30+ HR potential, with enough pitch recognition skills to hit .270+ and get on base at a respectable clip. No one is predicting that kind of performance this season, of course, so temper expectations to that of a typical rookie...but Ozuna has some long term upside potential, if you can acquire him cheaply in keeper leagues.
