  • Jake McGee

McGee has a couple comments in the Closer Watch, but I think he deserves more discussion. Tampa Bay has no other logical closers, and he has the recent success of Bailey and Feliz as reference.

Todd Zola's comment when he took McGee as a last round flyer.

24.09 Jake McGee, RP, TAM: If the chat room groans and cursing were any indication, some of my fellow drafters forgot about McGee and the likelihood he will close in Tampa. I didn’t.

It seems to me that managers who say they will use a bullpen by committee usually wind up picking one guy they will run out there in the ninth. It's like they can't help it.

It may be good in some cases, if knowing he is the man helps a reliever concentrate, focus and have confidence in save situations. But, it also limits the matchups the manager can set up.

This tangentially relates to the issue of managers not using their best reliever in the most critical situations...never bringing in their closer in the 7th even when the game is on the line.

Is there an option for "I have no idea"? This is a closer situation that to me is one of the most up in the air right now.

That would be the banana boat.

Voted McGee as I feel he will end the year as their closer and have the most saves over the season. That said, I think they will open the year with Farnsworth who will not survive May before giving way to McGee.

The poll question needs to be more specific. Who will close for the Rays at the beginning of the season? Probably Farnsworth. Who will close for the Rays at the end of the season? Probably McGee. Who will get the most saves for the Rays this season? Probably McGee, unless they make a trade.
