  • Brandon Maurer - what can we expect?

Now that Maurer is in the Seattle rotation, what can we expect? The fences have come in and many have noted that the dimensions are similar to Cellular so we may no longer automatically expect seattle SP to be useful.

Should I drop Lilly for Maurer? Smyly?

I'm sure Bodz will provide more sound and useful info here, but the short of what I think he'll say:

    1. Maurer is good. the only knock on him is health. If he can stay healthy, he can be above league average.
    2. They did move the fences in and that will have an impact, but the impact won't change this into a hitters park, due to the astomphere pushing down balls, so don't let the changes to the park turn you completely off Seattle pitchers in general, or Maurer in particular.
    3. If you want to worry about Seattle pitchers, do so less because of the park changes and more because of poor OF defense. That will effect Mariner's pitchers, but Maurer has a GB/FB rate of 1.29, so it won't affect him as much as others.
    4. To reiterate, Maurer is good. There may be an adjustment period, but he has been great this spring, so maybe not. Get him, ride him, and hope he doesn't get hurt. He is a better gamble than Ted Lilly. I own him and I would not drop or trade him for Lilly or Smyly, although Smyly may be a decent gamble too, if you think he'll make it back into the rotation as some point.
