  • MLB sues Fla. clinic over banned player drugs

Why no mention of Ryan Braun, Robinson Cano and others? All these guys have to be knocked down a peg or two in drafts, wouldn't you think?

MIAMI (AP) -- Major League Baseball on Friday sued a now-shuttered South Florida clinic and its operators, accusing them of scheming to provide banned performance-enhancing drugs to players in violation of their contracts...

Although it seeks money damages, the lawsuit also could provide a way for MLB to more deeply investigate Biogenesis and Bosch through depositions of witnesses and subpoenas to obtain documents...

Among those implicated are New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, outfielder Melky Cabrera of the Toronto Blue Jays, Washington pitcher Gio Gonzalez, Oakland pitcher Bartolo Colon, Texas outfielder Nelson Cruz and San Diego catcher Yasmani Grandal. Most have denied the Biogenesis link, although Rodriguez has admitted using performance-enhancing drugs earlier in his career and Colon, Cabrera and Grandal were each suspended for 50 games last year for testing positive for elevated testosterone levels.

I don't think Cano was ever mentioned as being in those lists from Biogenesis. Braun on the other hand was, and yeah, no mention.

Yeah, the lawyers on the board could chime in and better explain things, but I think that's exactly what MLB is trying to do, get access to the records and depose the staff. It's a pretty smart (for MBL, which is traditionally NOT smart) way to get around the fact that Biogenisis refuses to cooperate with them. The only problem with something like this is the timetable...it would be months, if not years, before baseball gets the proof that it wants, if they ever get it.

They'd be better off hiring Jim Rockford to tail Braun and Melky in the off-season.

Yeah, sorry about Cano. It appears that he is a victim of guilt by association. As far as no mention of Braun, I'm thinking the Yahoo Sports reporter must be either a Braun owner negotiating a trade or a Huge Brewer fan.

Word is out from ESPN Outside the Lines that MLB is going to suspend Braun, ARod, and others and they have testimony from the clinic owner now to back them up. Things are about to get nutty if so.

This is potentially a huge mistake by MLB.

Either have faith in your drug testing system and express it publicly, or do not. MLB screwed the pooch once by firing the arbitrator when Braun got off on a technicality rather than biting the PR bullet and celebrating "the fairness and absolute transparency of the system".

Circumstantial evidence is one thing, but unless they have reams of sworn testimony by people my view is that this is a mistake.
