  • Should I trade Alex Gordon $10 for Matt Moore $5?

Mixed 5x5 Ultra league I'm already stacked with keepers on offense and in the OF, and shy on pitchers. But is this a good value trade as well? Both Gordon and Moore would require extension decisions before the draft, as well.

    Projected Keepers:

    1B Butler 21
    SS As.Cabrera 2
    3B Longoria 20
    CI/OF G.Jones 1
    OF McCutchen 35
    OF Bautista 15
    OF Harper 15
    OF Gordon 10
    OF Pagan 9
    SP Wainwright 2

No. I have Gordon being worth about $10 more than Moore. Offer Pagan and see what he says.

Given your team and the contracts plus the young age of Moore, I think I would do it. I do not think I would extend him.

Although I said yes, I also had the thought of offering Pagan. I just decided to answer the question. I think this is a good idea. If he doesn't bite on Pagan I would still pull the trigger.

If I had Moore I would not deal him for Gordon or Pagan. I think Gordon is a solid little $20 OF but I like Matt Moore as a staff anchor if he gets a touch better control and 25 more IP this year.
Find that level above your head and help you reach it.

Yes, I'm shocked to see the suggestion of offering Pagan. If I got that as a counter, it would let me know my trade partner does noot value Moore as I do and I'd move on. Gordon for Moore is a fair deal.

                I'd jump all over a $5 Moore for a $10 Gordon.

Last season, Moore was worth $9 and Pagan $21. Using this season's BBHQ projections, which have Pagan's stats as a slight decline from 2011 but Moore with a massive improvement, Pagan is still valued at $17 to Moore's $16. So I don't think that it's terrible.

Gordon's projected at $25 (a $15 value over his contract) to Moore's $11 value over contract (again, assuming a massive improvement).

I like Moore as much as the next guy, but let's remember he had a 3.85 ERA and 1.35 WHIP last year. He'd have to drop his ERA by 50+ points and his WHIP by 15+ points to have the value he's projected for.

                    Moore's Pre All Star Numbers:
                    99 IP 4.42 1.45 96K 50BB 95 Hits Allowed

                    Moore's Post All Star Numbers:
                    77 IP 3.01 1.21 79K 31BB 63 Hits Allowed

Digging deeper he gave up only 5 HR in the second half as opposed to 13 before. He also lowed his walks quite a bit. We also see a decrease in Hits/IP.

These are all signs to me that he started pitching a bit more to contact and started pitching more intelligently which is what we always like to see from young guys.

I totally understand that Pagan was a solid player last year, but I think that is his ceiling. Matt Moore has and upside that is Cy Young caliber. For my money, I wouldn't consider dealing Moore for Pagan even if they were both $5.

Yep, this is where gambling and speculation come in. Some of us are betting on Moore's upside, some may not be so convinced. I said I would do the trade but was not sure I would extend Moore.

How would the extend work? One year would be $5? So he'd be $10 immediately or $10 starting in '14?

Ours works that it starts immediately.

So can anyone tell me why he wouldn't be worth $10 in '13 and '14? Why would you not extend him at least one season?

Some leagues do not hold pitchers in as high regard than others. Some would take the profit and lower the risk that comes with young pitchers. Some just plain old need the money at auction.

I am not saying that he is not worth the raise and would find no fault in giving him a year. I am saying I am not sure I would. Of course that kind of decision help is what I have you guys for.
