  • Keeper Trade rule advice

Wanting to tweak a rule in our 16-team mixed keeper league.

We have a very active league, lots of trades, and I have no interest in adding a veto rule or anything like that. We have a lot of keeper trades every season — contenders trade their cheap prospects for more expensive players for the stretch run. All good.

But right at our deadline, we always have a few deals that seem to be made just for the sake of making a deal. As in, the last few studs are dealt for very marginal, "maybe I'll keep this guy" players. We have an early trade deadline, on purpose, but that means there's a legitimate chance one of these guys might be worth keeping, but more often than not they don't pan out.

So, there's no impropriety going on, but it would still be nice if there was a way to make these marginal deals less common. One simple way would be to lower the salary cap, i suppose. Just wondering if there's any other ideas?

Are the studs on expiring contracts? If so, do you have toppers, or better yet, we use "finchers" in my leagues which allow you to retain your expiring player for a little less than his final bid at next year's auction, instead of a dollar more as with toppers. The point is to give second division teams some incentive to hold on to those expiring contracts for next year, or at least demand more of a return in trade. There used to be an old thread at the old site where I went into detail about our fincher system, I'll look for it if you think it might help your situation.
Some people say winning isn't everything. I say those people never won anything.

Quitters never win, winners never quit, but those who never win AND never quit are idiots.

The last thing I want to do is hurt you...but it's still on the list.

Some people are like Slinkies, they are not really good for anything but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

No, we haven't tried anything like that. Would be interesting to read about it.

We allow $100 in keepers so the guys being traded away are often in the $30-45 range.

We auction with a cap of $260 but it goes up to $320 during the season.

How about just make anyone traded for a $25 player (an expiring player, a $30 player, whatever) a mandatory keep? Or require that someone you acquire be designated a mandatory keeper? So if you trade Braun for Alexi Amarista, Joba Chamberlain and Jose Tabata, you only have to designate one of those 3 as a keeper. You could make an exception if the mandatory keeper gets hurt and is out for at least half of the following season or something like that.
