  • Roger Bernadina

Any Nats fans here? What do people think of Bernadina? I've got him at $4 in my 5x5 NL draft keeper league and I was not planning to hold on to him. But, given his potential upside and competition, I'm starting to think he may be good for a lot more ABs this year then the conventional wisdom seems to indicate.

Morgan is not a lock to hold on to that job in Center and I could envision Bernadina taking a lot of playing time both in center and left this year. If he plays, I figure he should hit ~.250, maybe 10 HRs, and 20 SBs. If he ends up hitting in the back of that lineup I don't see him with more than 50 runs or RBIs but if he can end up at the top of the order he could have decent numbers.

What do people think, is he a keeper at $4?

Right now, Bernadina is the starting left fielder. He should be kept at $4 unless you're absolutely loaded with cheap outfielders.

Agreed. 20-25 SBs and potential for double digit HRs? Sounds like a poor mans Stubbs to me.
I'm just here for the baseball.

Problem is the Nats have a ton of OFs... where did you see that Bernadina is the starting left fielder? He has Ankiel and Morse competing for the left fielder job still as far as I can see.

I think he's underrated by most circles at this point. I think .260, 10 HR, 25 SB is very achievable for Bernadina, and I believe there's upside in the stolen base department, too. He's not going to be an asset in batting average in all likelihood, but otherwise, he's a pretty interesting guy to own this year. Morse is a bum of a fielder, so I hope the Nats give Bernadina the bulk of the playing time.

Thanks all for the input. Like minnehan, I also have seen that he's competing for a job with Ankiel and Morse, and now that he may take playing time from Morgan. My draft is in 2 week so I've got time.

As for OFs, I've also got Huff and Colvin both at $5 and I was planning to hold on to both, and move Huff to my CI spot. My goal is to trade Huff early before he starts to breakdown. I've also got Torres at $8 this year who I plan to keep and hope they trade Rowand (assuming he gets some PT this spring).

I thought Morse was starting in LF? They have Morse, Bernadina, Morgan and Ankiel. Who's the odd man out?

2 odd men out as you dont have Werth on your list. The clutter of Ofers here will make all 4 (not Werth) useless for fantasy purposes.
After former Broncos quarterback Brian Griese sprained his ankle and said he was tripped on the stairs of his home by his golden retriever, Bella: “The dog stood up on his hind legs and gave him a push? You might want to get rid of that dog, or put him in the circus, one of the two.”

One baseball source outside the Nationals’ organization tells Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post that he believes the Nationals will start Rick Ankiel in center field.
In turn, he believes the Nationals will use Roger Bernadina as the backup in center field and option Nyjer Morgan to Triple-A Syracuse. Meanwhile, Nationals manager Jim Riggleman says the competition between the trio is "wide open." There's no easy platoon here since, Morgan, Ankiel and Bernadina all bat left-handed. Morgan probably has the most potential from a fantasy perspective, though he's coming off a very disappointing season.

Thanks Hammer, I need to clear out the cobwebs and get ready for roto, forgot about Werth.

I think Morse is going to hit for some nice power this year. He hit a bunch last year in like 250 ABs, is doing it again in Spring Training and has a leg up on the LF gig.
Find that level above your head and help you reach it.

Morse is a big guy with a long swing. He could easily hit .250-25HR in 450ish AB. But I'm not sure how durable he is. I know Ankiel isn't Mr. Durability. I'm not sure Werth is either. So even if Bernadina is the 4th OF, he'll get his ABs.

Morgan hit a 3-run shot off of Bretty Myers today, so maybe this blurb was designed to light a fire under him. I vaguely recall reading or hearing he isn't the best clubhouse citizen, so perhaps the Nats feel that if he isn't starting, they don't want him around. Elijah Dukes 2.0 is the last thing their rebuilding plan needs.

I keep hear the song by Tone Loc when I read his name.

                            Funky Bernadina

The more I read, the more I like Bernadina for increased playing time this year.
