LOL...at this juncture Steve, crafty is the operative word, we all have acquired a few potential black-holes on our rosters .
The lag time this past week worked out well for me as I was on an airplane almost everyday.

Victory Is Beer Draft Recap

At the bottom of the draft, my early strategy was to take the best hitting available. I loved seeing Adrian Beltre on the board with pick 20, and for the next pick, I was flipping a coin between J-Hey and J-Up. At the time, Upton’s situation was very up in the air, so I went with J-Hey. I think that J-Up landed in a stable situation in Atlanta, and he’d be my pick now if I had a do-over, but I’m happy with J-Hey.

In rounds 3/4 I wanted to keep accumulating offense. Some very attractive pitchers were still on the board, but I went with A-Jax and Freddie Freeman, adding solid power and some steals without sacrificing average.

I had intended to keep adding to my offense, but that seemed to be everyone else’s strategy as well. There were several pitchers of the same tier on the board: Dickey, Cueto, Shields, and J-Zimm topped my list, so I decided to grab the first two.

On the next turn, I had Howie Kendrick in my sights but he was nabbed two picks before me. I added a solid bat in Torii Hunter. With my next pick, since Howie was gone and there were not any other middle infielders that I loved here, I went pitcher again, adding Ian Kennedy. I thought long and hard about Linci here, but maybe because he was on my Mock One team last year, I decided to pass.

Josh Rutledge was the target the next time around. He should put up solid numbers in Colorado and have 2b/ss eligibility before too long. But sunnuva-b he was taken a few picks before me. I decide to not wait any longer on a middle infielder and grab Dustin Ackley. He probably went fifty picks earlier the year before, so hopefully this is buying low. My other pick was a definite buy-low: Justin Morneau. Can he regain his health and be a middle of the order producer? It’s a worthwhile gamble at this point to find out.

The 11/12 turn was where I had to make a hard decision. I needed some speed and Everth Cabrera was still on the board. He’d certainly fill that need plus he’d fill my SS position, so I’m grabbing him. There’s a bunch of lower-tier relievers that I like here: Reed, Betancourt, Perkins, Grilli, Chishek. I’d really like two of them, much less one. But I also like a few starters here. I’ll roll the dice that a reliever makes it back to me and grab Hell-boy to be my #4 starter. That makes a very solid core-four.

But the gamble does not pay off, as one by one each reliever is plucked off the board. Nuts. I decide to grab two 20 HR hopeful bats in Duda and Moss. At the next turn, I add more of the same with Delmon Young but also grab more wheels in Dee Gordon to be my MI. I could have the top two SB leaders in the NL, or I could have two guys toiling in AAA.

My hitting run ends as I pick up Brandon Beachy. He’ll miss half the year, but if he can give me a solid two months, the pick will work out fine. I add solid reliever Dave Robertson. At the next turn, I grab another injured upside pitcher in Andrew Cashner. Jason Vargas is a good starter to spot-start. I round out the draft with Joaquin Benoit and finally fill my catcher position with Russell Martin. In the Reserve rounds I need to grab another bat with Delmon possibly missing April, not to mention Dee Gordon likely to start the year in the minors. I’ll also need to look at a pitcher or two to fill in for Beachy and Cashner.

Word here is Bailey is going to be dealt before Spring Training is over. I have a lot more confidence in Hanrahan more than Bailey.

Hanrahan was slightly less effective in 2012 than he was in 2011, but he's shown no signs of being ready to fall apart. Bailey can't ever stay healthy. I don't get why anyone would have more confidence in Bailey than in Hanrahan.

I believe as an ex Pirate fan and now a Yankee fan; JC has developed a negative grudge/bias towards Pirates...current and former

Regardless, I agree with JC that Joel's stuff may not translate well to the AL and especially the AL East .

FYI, both Frank and Hammer have "illegal" rosters. I hate the 'draft your starters first then your reserves' but as dey say, a rule is a rule. Frank has no 2B (I think he may have drafted Eric Young Jr. with the idea he was 2B-eligible, but he ain't) and Hammer is short one OFer.

If I had more confidence in Bailey than Hanrahan I would have picked Bailey 10 rounds ago. Just saying that I'm not a huge believer in Hanrahan; as Frank said, I have serious concerns about how his stuff will translate to the AL East. He had a walk rate over 5 last year and a 39% GB rate. He was great at preventing the long ball in 2011 and that evaporated last year. His skills are all over the map which means we don't really know what they are. Pitching for the Pirates in PNC Park is a lot different than pitching in Fenway.

Bailey seems like he's healthy now, so maybe he can steal the job and get a few saves before he gets hurt again. Maybe. I certainly think he's a good spec pick at #480 or whatever.

Frank has Prado (who qualifies at 2B, SS, 3B and OF) at 2B and Young in the OF in the roster thread. You should look there and while you are there fill in your roster. It's rather empty.

You're right on Hammer's roster though. I count only 4 OF.
