  • RHD's Latest Top 150 Roto Prospects ("Opening Day" Edition)

Well, here we are at another opening day. Time for an updated Top 150 list. Not many new names this time but some players moved up or down a lot. Previous list was from 1/19/24.

The usual litany: I generally follow BA's prospect eligibility requirements, which are <=130 MLB AB or <=50 MLB IP. Unlike BA tho, amateurs, unsigned draftees, foreign players and newly-signed players from foreign leagues are eligible. Also, while BA has a different IP limit for relievers (30 IP?), relievers are eligible as long as they dont have >50 IP. As usual, this is for roto, not 'real' baseball, so pitchers are downgraded some, catchers downgraded somewhat (unless they're elite prospects and their bat will play at any position), actual closers are upgraded a lot, SB guys who project to get playing time get upgraded some, and guys who either currently are or project to soon be regulars can get upgraded quite a bit. Position listed is their current primary one to the best of my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong), not the one they're likely to end up at.

    Fine list RHD.

Why did you drop Hernaiz from 92 all the way out? He's had a good spring and made the A's to begin the year.

      Thanx for the response, Harmon.

Some players are on the list mostly because they project to get a lot of PT in MLB. If they're not going to get significant PT, even if they're on the MLB roster, there are other players I'd rather have on the list. Hernaiz, as well as Wilyer Abreu, fall into this category. At the time of my last list, both of these players were listed as being starters and in the following weeks were moved back and forth between starting and the bench and between MLB and the minors. I moved each of them off and on at least once. I decided to leave them off since they're both now on the bench and dont figure to get much PT unless someone gets hurt. Since Rafaela is starting now for the Sox Abreu figures to stay on the bench or get sent down again. Hernaiz might still get a shot if Lawrence Butler struggles. I just got tired of moving them off and on when there are other players that I like on the list regardless of whether they figure to get immediate MLB time.

Btw, can you offer thoughts on why Crews over Wood? Certainly doesn’t seem that way at this juncture (to my untrained eye). Also, Jose Perdomo - too far away?

Thanx as always for the response, Sharky.

Pretty much everyone still has Crews over Wood. FG is the only major prospects site that has Wood above him. If the Nationals had put Wood on their opening day roster, then I might have moved him up. Wood certainly should be up in MLB later this year but I think Crews will too so I dont see that as a big separator either.

Perdomo is very far away from MLB. So is De Vries and he is on the list. But De Vries seems to be in a tier above Perdomo. But Perdomo is not far off at (#188, currently.

Curious why Caissie fell in your rankings? He was crushing it all spring. Do you factor in Bellinger signing making it more crowded OF situation?
If DMT didn't exist we would have to invent it. There has to be a weirdest thing. Once we have the concept weird, there has to be a weirdest thing. And DMT is simply it.

                Thanx for the response, DMT.

Caissie didnt really fall. It's just that others moved past him. For where he is on the list, 5 spots is really nothing. I dont pay much attention to spring stats. I read scouting reports and look at rankings and what I saw re: Caissie mostly just confirmed what I already thought about him so he didnt really move. The Bellinger signing didnt really move the needle either. Might delay his callup some but he was at AA all last year so he probably needs a good amount of time at AAA anyway. If he's as good as people think he is, they'll make room for him at some point.

Clarke is not too far off the list but not particularly close either. BA's report seems to indicate he has nice power/speed tools but is relatively hi-risk because of contact issues. He's missed a lot of time to injury and is somewhat old for his league. I'm not particularly excited about him.
