  • AL Corner Question

In a 10 team AL only 5x5 league, how happy would you be going into the auction filling your 3 corner spots with Lawrie, Morales and Butler for a total of $37?

    Moderately happy?

$15 for Lawrie, $20 for Butler, $10 for Kendrys sound about right?

On a scale of 1-10 I would be a 6.5. Morales should be a decent power source but I'm not too high on him. Lawrie I am hoping straightens things out and he has great power/speed upside. Butler is a legit .300/30/100 guy.
Find that level above your head and help you reach it.

I like it. Butler and Lawrie probably earn 37 themselves.

In an earlier "keeper" type thread someone posed a similar question and got a response of something to the effect of "why not look at them individually?" I kind of agree. If it's $30 for Lawrie, I might hesitate. Likewise for Butler. But if it's somewhere in the middle I probably like Butler, then Lawrie. Ho-hum on Kendrys depending on price.

I'm keeping a $25 Butler in my AL 10-team, but there will be pretty significant inflation there.

umm...that would be $45. It would be more like 12, 13, 12 which would be very good. I am guessing one of those is more expensive, but the reason we really like cheap players is so we can afford the expensive ones.

That was me with my $91 outfield. I asked the question the way that I did because I really wanted to know if you would be happy spending $91 on a $260 budget for those players. I did not want to try to explain league inflation, players back in the pool, etc. In my expample, if I throw my expensive guy back I might not get him for same price (he is one of the best). I imagine that is what is going on here.

Even if Butler is 30 that leaves $7 for the other two guys (which is a steal). I do not know the league that luckyheel is in. I have to leave that up to him. Maybe Butler is the best available if he puts him back. Maybe there is a lot of money in the auction. The real question is given the parameters that lucky has given I would be happy with those three players for $37.

That doesn't mean that you should overspend just because you have the money to do so. If Lawrie and Morales are $1 each, that doesn't mean that it's a good idea to spend $35 for Butler (especially if you could get him back for $30). You need to look at each player's value individually. Anyone can overspend and get the "best" player, but an owner's goal should be to get the best value.

Well technically we all spend at least one dollar too much at auction for every player purchased. We are the ones willing to spend the most over all of our competitors.

I have been a believer in "averaging" with some pretty good success for many years. That is not to say throw money away. In order to do it you have to really know your league, who will be back in, where the holes are, how much money, etc. It really does not matter if you keep a $35 Butler or buy one at auction. I understand that you "MAY" get him for $30 if the cards all fall right, but you may also have to pay $40 if things go bad (or settle for the likes of James stinkin Loney for $18).

Not a big deal, just a different way of looking at things.

I think considering player values as a group is a legit practice. I use it all the time to justify buys I might not make otherwise. Holding a one dollar closer makes me more likely to spend 20 on a second closer. In fact I usually budget my auction dollars this way - 45 for my corners 80 for my outfield and so on.

In a ten team AL only league I would be very happy heading into my draft with these 3 players for $37. Assuming even a little bit of inflation and depth of those postions I would take that group in a heart beat.

                        Thanks, everyone...

Kendry is $4, Lawrie is $10 and Butler $23.

                          And those prices are fine.

Yeah, I'd keep them all. I generally don't like being hamstrung by filling up a position group (1b/3b/CI) going into auction, but at those prices you should get enough value. Might want to hold off on filling your U slot if you can to prevent other owners from being able to pick up super-steals late in the draft. I know I try to do this to others in auction (esp endgame) if I can by keeping track of who can nominate what positions.

Nice. I would have no problem at all going in with these.
