  • 2K13: What Can We Do to Improve the Fantasy Baseball Forum?

I know it's really early in the calendar year and there are lots of world and domestic issues, but I really am letdown at how this forum is now. I have noticed over the last two or three years that it continues to have less and less discussion. You go to other forums and they are hair-splitting ad naseum on players and here it's a ghost town.

I always try to get the 2K13 threads going each year as I really love breaking stuff down but I'm not sure why a fantasy baseball MB spends all of its time repeatedly fighting over religion, politics, evolution, etc. I used to come here because it was loaded with so many smart people who really helped push me to new levels. I like to try to give back where I can but I don't understand what is going wrong. Maybe it's just early and maybe it's just this or that, but I feel like we've said that all before.

Please forgive my little sidebar rant here but I just hope all of you smart and opinionated contributors will spend some time helping building out this forum and providing your analysis (or dare I say it: fight over something here more frequently)

I think that it's just a natural cycle...many of the old timers didn't make the migration over when the Fanball Bastards pulled the rug out from under the old place. Other people have just gone to other sites, or simply moved on to other pursuits...can't say that I blame them. I don't know how you can recruit new members over the internet, but if there's a way, I'm all for it. I try to keep active, and post as much as I can, but it does get a little tiresome some days.

You don't think it's a seasonal ebb and flow? Seems like we get plenty of "lurkers" once the fantasy season / spring training roll around.

No, honestly I don't...Jason could provide you with the raw numbers of old v new, but I think were down a pretty significant amount of seamheads. Paul Sporer doesn't post here anymore, neither does Bodz, and they were always good for some good fodder, if not a little controversy to boot. Plus there are a ton of guys like Funkley, Hammer, and others who might pop in, but don't contribute on a regular basis.

it's the same thing we've discussed before -- a significant loss of RJers from the Fanball debacle, and the current, existing RJers posting less because of the lack of any substance.

I sent out an email last week to existing RJers who have not posted in the last six months, and I thought I saw a few heads pop back in. Now whether they contributed anything is another story.

I think we lost a large number of a quality posters because they were so good at their analysis. Whether it be baseball or football we've had a large number of core members parlay their analysis here into working for some of the pay sites out there. That leads to not having time to post here as much, not wanting to give for free what other people will pay for, etc.

I am hoping to get more focused in baseball this year like I was a couple of years past and while I'm certainly not the analytical mind of some of the people we've lost I can at least provide watered down volume!

                Fark fanball...screwed this place up
Twitter also doesn't help as people want short & quick immediate responses
                Facebook goes the same way

I'm doing a mock draft for the Rotoword draft mag representing this site so there's some free name exposure to put out there.

Just my two cents but I think exposure will only work if people hear what is going on. Maybe some of you who publish articles (blogs, whatever) could do a write up on RJ. Tell fantasy fans that it's a forum with experienced players where helpful insight and advice is exchanged.

One of the things I have always liked here (and it might sound stupid) is the interface of the site. My eyes are pretty web-sensitive and sites like Cafe just bug the hell out of me (way too congested).

All of us need to dig up some fantasy friends that will contribute and make it more lively.

Also some of us have been doing fantasy for so long that we burned out on it.

I will see what I can do - I am in a new league - maybe some will give it a try.

i know I come here for advice, but rarely if ever offer opinions because we have many more people here that do more research and see more games than I do.

If it weren't for the Sports Bar, I would hardly ever post here, but I would still come for the insights of others.

I think that there's a lot of truth in this. It seems that when RJ was at its most active there was a core of guys in our late 20's & 30's who had the available time needed to conduct detailed baseball analysis as a hobby. Ten years later we're married with kids ... priorities have shifted; and we simply haven't replaced the oldtimers with new blood.
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

Besides, your alter egos are better at fantasy than you are. After all, being ficticious entities, fantasy is in their DNA.

If MJ hadn't restricted how many identities Steve gets, we would probably have twice as many members on the board right now.
