Nate Schierholtz to a one year contract. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!

This is a great piece for the rebuilding Cubs...not.

This wasn't a move about rebuilding the team (as the 1 year contract shows). Theo and Jed seem to be only looking at being able to field a subpar to average team for 2013 that will lead to high draft picks in 2014. Rebuilding the farm system is task #1, #2 and #3. If the guys they sign this offseason have enough value to be flipped for anything in July, that is fine too. Schierholtz fits that mold pretty well. Cub fans have another one to three lean years to have to sit through before the front office plans to try to be competitive.

The Cubs re-signed third baseman Ian Stewart to a one-year, $2 million contract with $500,000 worth of incentives.

And with the first pick of the 2014 MLB draft, the Cubs select...

Wow, they really aren't even trying to improve the major league lineup.

It sure seems this way. I'm surprised at their patience. I thought they'd be spending a bit more on some hitters, with attendance dropping over the last few years. While it is still quite early, the Cubs now rank just 17th in 2013 payroll. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/co...013&team=&pos=

And with Schierholtz and Stewart, the Cubs have signed clear starters at 7 of 8 positions (all but second base, where they could sign someone better to take over for Barney). So if they do spend money, I'd think it'd be on a second baseman or the starting rotation. But long-run contracts to starting pitching seem foolish if you don't intend to compete in year one of the contract, given how pitchers get hurt.
