As long as the deal isn't too long, I like the idea for the Mariners.

They should stop putting it off and move Montero to first base. Let Jaso start until the Z-man is ready.

    C Jaso
    1B Montero
    2B Ackley
    SS Ryan
    3B Seager
    LF Bay/Ibanez
    CF Saunders
    RF Hamilton
    DH Wells/Liddi/Catricala/Carp Smoak competition

    It could be worse.

If Seager and Saunders keep it up, and Montero, Bay & Ackley step it up, that's actually a good lineup if they add Hamilton.

The Phillies, interested in a right-handed batter to hit behind cleanup man Ryan Howard, talked to the Cubs about a swap of Domonic Brown for Alfonso Soriano but may still be slightly more inclined to sign a free agent, such as Cody Ross or someone else. The Cubs are believed willing to pay all but $10 million of the $36 million remaining on Soriano's deal if they can receive good prospects back. The Cubs are all about gathering assets for the future.

If true the Phillies are run by idiots.

If they want to add 15 million to the payroll they could just sign Swisher and keep Brown too.

the rumour a few days ago was that the Mets were asking for JPA + Gose.
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

That would be a great deal for the Jays. In a different thread someone mentioned (and I agree) that Bourjos + Arrencibia (in a hypothetical three-way trade) was not enough. I don't see how Gose is better than Bourjos, they are pretty similar, actually.

Gose and JPA/D'Arnaud is what I just heard on MLB Network radio.

As a Mets fan, I would be sad to see Dickey go. And if it's Arencibia and Gose, I don't think it's nearly enough. D'Arnaud (plus Gose, I guess) seems like a more suitable return.

How about some input from the Blue Jays fans (virgonomic?) about the relative strengths of these guys?

They are our two top prospects, acquired in the Roy Halladay trade. Gose has explosive speed and runs like a gazelle. He was overmatched at the plate last year. A Juan Pierre clone. D'Arnaud is recovering from a torn PCL. He is a power hitting catcher.

they quietly did a good job of re-stocking that farm system.

That said, trading their top prospect & Gose for an old pitcher, and the fact knuckleballs typically don't work as well in domes, is a strange move

Gose has an arm. How dare you compare him to Pierre.

It sounds like Dickey deal is close...

The New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays are nearing a deal that would send reigning Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey to the Toronto Blue Jays for a package that includes top prospect Travis d'Arnaud, a source close to the negotiations told Yahoo! Sports early Saturday. As the Mets finalized their shopping of Dickey and appeared to settle on the Blue Jays late Friday, the proposed deal grew in size upon Toronto's willingness to include d'Arnaud, the game's best catching prospect. While the other players involved could not be confirmed, the source said the teams were in the process of exchanging medical information on the players involved. Toronto's willingness to give up a prospect of d'Arnaud's caliber – a Foxsports.com report also said outfield prospect Anthony Gose was likely to be included in the deal – hinged on the growth of the trade to include other players as well as the possibility of Dickey signing a contract extension.

Agreed. Candiotti was a disaster back in 1991. That said, there isn't much out there, and they are clearly fully stocking the roster for a playoff run. Maybe they adjust the rotation so Dickey starts more on the road?

What's the physics behind this? I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain around this.
