I only know the internal discussion for one team, but I can say that with the majority of free agents having signed, most teams rosters are at 40, which means putting someone else on waivers in order to make a waiver claim.

      • The Dodgers traded right-handed pitcher John Ely to the Astros for left-handed Minor League pitcher Rob Rasmussen, both clubs announced Wednesday.

I just do not get the fascination with that guy. He seems to be somewhere close to mediocre to me and certainly not worth a multi-year deal. He's a poor defender with bad on-base skills who has some power. Does that sound like a 3 year / $26 million guy to you?
Why the hell do the D'Backs need Cody Ross? Even after trading Chris Young they have Adam Eaton, Jason Kubel, Justin Upton and Gerardo Parra. Not to mention A.J. Pollock in AAA. Maybe an Upton trade is closer than we think?

          • I don't understand what Towers has done this offseason in the slightest.

As for Ross, I suspect people are remembering his 2010 postseason moreso than the rest of his career.

            • OK, so the Red Sox still haven't finalized their deal with Mike Napoli - something about concerns during his physical - what is going on there? Is he talking to other teams? Are they still planning to sign him?

Zach Duke next? Collecting all of the 2008 Pirates may not be the best path to victory...

Seems like they are worried about his hip and want the third year to be a vesting option based on games played. Or something like that. I think it's mostly speculation by local reporters at this point. I did see a rumor that another AL team contacted him.
I'm unconsoled I'm lonely, I am so much better than I used to be.

                    • One of my best waiver wire pickups a few years ago decides to go home--

Takashi Saito has signed a one-year contract with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles.

Jays claimed Russ Canzler off waivers from Cleveland. He could stick as a 5th OF & sometime 1B/DH against LHP (i.e. to get Lind out of the lineup)
Just to prove that I really don't understand anything, the Jays today waived Canzler. He was promptly claimed by Cleveland.

It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

                        • There's a game that teams play where they claim someone off waivers and immediately spin them back through waivers to try to outright them to the minors. Sometimes it works, and then you have a free player under your control in your minors for the small price of $25k and carrying him on your 40-man for two days. But you have to have the 40-man spot for two days to pull it off. Since waivers aren't typically made public unless/until a transaction results, it can be hard for the typical fan to follow this game, but that's what's going on here.

I wonder if San Fran might take a run at him.
