  • Autumn musings

The weekly football musings is a favorite thread. On the first day of autumn (it isnt fall yet in Texas), here are some thoughts.

    AL version

The Royals would still be in the race (mathematically) when autumn came

The A's would be 4.5 games up on the Angels

The Mariners would ahve a better record than the Red Sox

A possible Triple Crown winner is not a slam dunk for the MVP

No one has a clue who the CY will be

    NL version

Greinke stinks, but the Brewers are still in the playoff hunt

    Cincinnati - Nuff said

    Giants - Ditto

Nationals - This is getting to be a theme

The Cubs 10 games ahead of anyone

The Padres 10 games ahead of them

    No CY favorite here either

    Your turn

    Nicely done.

    NL

Star players brought low by injuries this year: Kemp, Votto, Tulo, and more.

Stud pitchers cut down by injuries and headed for TJ surgery: Beachy, Luebke, and more.

Big seasons we didn't expect: Ryan Ludwick, Pedro Alvarez, Alfonso Soriano. (two of three may be the "dead cat bounce"?)

Big trade we didn't expect: Most of the Boston Red Sox to LA Dodgers. I could add to that LA Dodgers acquire Hanley Ramirez too.

The Pirates aren't guaranteed to finish under .500 yet.

More innings-managed young "stud" pitchers than ever seem to be headed for TJ surgery. Maybe it's not the innings?

The Cubs still have a shot at 100 losses. So do the Rockies (I guess Jesus doesn't care who wins).

The two leagues have relatively equal numbers of really good teams, but for the truly lousy ones, it's NL all the way.

A Pirate (Andrew McCutchen) is a serious MVP candidate.

Bobby Valentine is still the Red Sox manager.

The Nationals have the best record in the majors. (I was just in a production of Damn Yankees and had to explain to almost everyone just how awful Washington baseball has almost always been)

        That is a fact.

Who would have thought the Nationals would be the last team with a shot at 100 wins?
