  • Best Rookie Seasons Ever?

in light of Mike Trout's historic rookie season, what are the greatest rookie seasons in modern (post deadball era) MLB history? Some that instantly come to mind:

    - Ichiro, 2001
    - Piazza, 1993
    - McGwire, 1987
    - Fidrych, 1976
    - Fred Lynn & Jim Rice, 1975

What would an all-star team of the greatest rookies ever be?

Pujols 2001, too. 2B is probably the hardest position to fill.

      C Piazza 1993 ... .318/.370/.561, 35 HR, 112 RBI
      1B Hal Trosky 1934 ... 330/388/598, 35 HR, 142 RBI (sorry Big Mac)
      2B Joe Gordon 1938 (.255-25-97) or Joe Morgan 1965 (271/373/418 with 100 runs scored)
      SS Jeter 1996 ... .314/.370/.430, 104 runs and a World Series
      3B Pujols 2001 ...329/403/610 37 HR, 130 RBI
      LF Ted Williams 1939 ... 327/436/609, 31 HR, 145 RBI
      CF Lynn 1975 .... 331/401/566, 21 HR, 105 RBI
      RF Ichiro 2001 ... 350/381/457, 127 R, 56 SB

Honorable mention: Tony Oliva (.332-32HR), Frank Robinson (.320-38HR) ... you could slot either into LF and move Ichiro to CF if you wanted.

Don't forget Doc Gooden (17-9, 2.60 ERA, 276 Ks) for the rotation.

how could I forget Fernandomania in 1981, Hideo Nomo in 1995 or Kerry Wood's record-setting 1998 campaign?

          You're getting old?

Oh wait, that was probably rhetorical

Man...1975 was such a great year as an 11 yr old Red Sox fan... til Larry "****ing" Barnett ****ing SCREWED US on Ed Armbrister's (non) Interference call... but, luckily, I'm over it now...

Personally I can't compare Ichiro's rookie honors and numbers to other mlb rookies. Ichiro was like 28 years old and had already played 9 years in Japan. He should be left out of "best rookie seasons ever". JMO

I was thinking Ralph Kiner, who was Pujols in his day. But it was really his second year when he clicked.
                    First season: .247/23/81/63 (502 AB)
                    Second season: .313/51/127/118 (565 AB).

He took off from there. In fact, Kiner had more HR in his first two years than Pujols, Braun, Eddie Mathews. I think only Joe DiMaggio had more (75).

Jason Bay? He was a perennial all star candidate.

How about Pat Listach and Bob Hamelin?
