  • Which mediocre SP? (NL-only)

    Starting to get sick of Nolasco and Jordan Lyles is sitting on the free agent list. I have to endure Nolasco's start against StL on Monday, but I could then drop him and get Lyles' starts against SD and the Cubs next week. There's a pretty good chance Nolasco would get scooped up if I dropped him, but should I really care?

    Looking ahead, Lyles faces
    SD
    @ChC
    Milwaukee
    depending on how they shape their rotation after the ASB, @SD or @SF

    and Nolasco gets
    StL
    Philly
    @StL
    then probably vs. Washington after the ASB

    I miss having these dilemmas. My NL league folded after 19 years and now I am busy grabbing the likes of Justin Masterson off the waiver wire in a yahoo league.

    Not as much fun

      Nolasco is cuttable at this point. I'd roll the dice on Lyles.

        I am somehow in (a distant) 2nd place with Nolasco as my 4th SP - and with Lyles dangling out there.

        Nolasco has a 4.25 xERA for the season and a 4.39 xERA in last 31 days.
        Lyles is 4.46 xERA overall and 4.87 for the last 31 days.

        With matchups factored in, yes it gets close.

        Not sure the ever-changing STL lineup is the '27 Yankees, although they do have some good pieces obviously.

        My one caveat is that Nolasco left the bases loaded of Red Sox in his last start, and his "reliever" sent all three home. If he had gotten a DP ball there, would you be keeping Nolasco instead?

        I do feel your pain, but at this moment I don't intend to make this same switch (would be 2nd of 6 seasonal moves to dump an active player, so easier if you don't have such restrictions. I have opportunity cost to factor in).

          Yeah, we're charged $1 per waived player so I can't add/drop to my every whim. I didn't make a single move through the first month, but then the injuries kicked in...

          Nolasco's been shaky for a solid month now, so those inherited runners don't have much of an effect on my decision. Plus, Lyles was a guy I had on my farm so there's a nostalgia factor in play here. I always thought he would be Greg Maddux-lite and he's still young enough to get there so I don't want to be late to the party.

          Still not sure I'll make the switch, I guess Nolasco's start tomorrow will help clear things up.

            me too!

            "Lyles was a guy I had on my farm...."

            me too!

            One add: As bad as Nolasco can be, he seems to get a chance to pitch 5-6 innings and get mediocre wins. Not sure Lyles will be able to win as many, due to earlier hooks.

            how about that other Astros kid who won yesterday? Is he still out there?

              Someone just picked Keuchel up last night. Not a big fan of mediocre prospects with crappy K-rates - they seem to implode pretty quickly.

              Nolasco's wins have been nice, but it seems to be more luck than anything since the Marlins' offense isn't that great.

                I've got Nolasco in my NL only so I feel your pain. I think he and Billingsley have to be the 2 most frustrating pitchers to own.

                        likely to put a bid in tomorrow for Lyles as my 5th SP, replacing irrelevant Russell
                        2nd of 6 moves, so would be opportunity cost down the road, maybe
                        but hurting bad for Ws, and Lyles nearly a post-hype guy now and off 2 decent starts......
