  • NL- 5x5 results--not for the faint-hearted!

I took over a truly horrible team, made many trades to get something to start with--then [excuses, I know!] had a crappy draft for any number of good reasons. My problem is this: there is next to nothing left in the free agent pool with a 12-team, 25 active, 15 reserve roster, so fixing my roster will have to be done with astute trades.
C---maybe the best offensive position in the bunch: J Castro and M Lucroy
1B---Goldschmidt, at value, but should contribute several cats
3B--D Wright, hopefully healthy and well-pleased with the fences at Citi Field this year
    SS---Furcal, already struggling
    2B---Dan Murphy, healthy at last?
MI---S Drew, will he ever be healthy and meet expectations?
OF---Tabata, healthy [note this seems to be a recurring issue?] and ready to run
    OF---L Duda, my favorite keeper
OF---J Schafer, another keeper I expect to have a good year
    OF---D DeJesus, $6. and I hope a bargain
OF---B LaHair---my handcuff with A Rizzo in my minors reserve--I actually like this guy.
Extras---Paredes [in minors], Descalso [I like his versatility], C Coghlin [ugh! a mistake bid]
Reserve hitters include some decent guys, but all are future, no use this year at all.
    PITCHING---
Stauffer, Worley, Karstens---my pitching keepers! Nothing to see here, folks, move along!
Hanrahan as closer--nice price for this league at $27.
A Chapman---where is he slotted? At $9, he can be huge.
Dempster, E Bedard[ takes to the NL?]Eovaldi, Gregerson, Rauch, all of whom are cheap.CM Wang on the reserve if he ever gets healthy.
I had 3 first round picks, whom I expect to all thrive, but they are all down-the-line guys: Skaggs, Erlin, T Jenkins

All the cheap keepers, huge rosters, and the utter lack of FAAB targets make this a huge problem. I needed to draft well and did not do it. Any ideas for trade targets? Not necessarily specific players, but areas that will move the team along to competitive? I will likely sit tight, as usual, for 3-4 weeks and see how it shakes out, but I know I need to do a lot of work.
    Thanks!

    all in all not terrible.

Pitching: You obviously need a #1 starter. But that will be hard to grab. In worley, dempster and possibly Bedard you have three #3's. If you decided to play for this year-- you play your starters in favorable match-ups and spend FAAB on a bunch of high K /BB relievers who will keep your ERA/ Whip low. You will be ok if Chapman ends up a starter or closer. if Dusty puts him in MR-- you have an uphill battle for this year.

hitting ? counting on 3 Mets...hmmmm...with so many question marks at least you have starters at every position but you cannot take a zero at MI. Need to find somebody to who starts there for Drew. Descalso can at least back-up someone the injury prone Mets. Maybe Willie Bloomquist , Freddie Galvis, Emmanuel Burris is available as a FAAB?

    Good luck!

I think Drew is going to be a complete waste this year. I worry that Furcal won't be much better. So yes, as RR said, your SS/MI is a big problem. Is there any hope of trading either of them before the season starts and people realize how hopeless it is? Does Descalso qualify there yet? That would at least help with 1 spot. The rest of your lineup isn't bad but you really need 30+ HRs from Wright and Goldschmidt to prevent being dead last in HRs. Even that might not be enough.

Pitching is better, but I'd have rather spent that $9 for Aroldis on a $5 MR and upgrading one of your SPs. I think you just have to sit tight and hope your pitching is good enough while making moves to improve your offense.

If it makes you feel any better I have a team that looks worse after my NL only auction yesterday - like you, I knew it was bad going in.

Thanks, guys. This team started out awful and I know it will take time to put it all back together. Sadly, my draft wasn't what I needed it to be, but with 50 roster slots per 12 teams and 15 keepers, there isn't squat out there either in the draft or FAAB. I have a trade offer of either DeJesus$6, or Tabata, $10.[-last year of contract] for Brandon Crawford, SS, SF, plus a fair exchange of reserve picks next year. I am not in love with Crawford [$10, first year contract], but he beats what I now have. Which would you see me trading, DeJesus or Tabata [speed]?

Crawford can't hit. I wouldn't bother unless you get points for fielding.

Your worst fears realized--Dusty says Chapman will open the season in the pen, with Marshall closing.

Although some think Crawford will be a better hitter this year-- both Dejesus and Tabata are not equal value. Sit tight and wait to see what develops.
