Here's what they went for in my 12-team keeper league:

    Howard - $21
Utley - $23 (to the same guy who got Howard)
    Carpenter - $16
    Chipper - $14
    Drew - $19
Quentin - $13 (to the same guy who got Howard and Utley)

I drafted Chipper and Drew myself, but they were both toward the end of the auction when I had money to burn. Chipper's only expected to miss the first week or two of the season, but of course he's a huge injury risk anyway.

Those are CRAZY prices for Utley and probably Carpenter and Drew, too. They can have good comebacks eventually and still never be worth it.

Howard was bid to 25 in our NL only league. He was taken by a guy who is rebuilding for next year.

After the auction during lunch he proposed a Howard and Jurrgens ($6) trade for $26 Goldschmidt and Anthony Bass ($5 reserve rd yes I like him,no none of us new he made the opening day roster). I added his Ty Wigginton and Tim Federowicz (who he outbid me for at $3) for my Carlos Gomez and John Baker.

I was the guy who bid $24 on Howard.

Chipper doesn't make any sense in that strategy at $1 unless retired players have value in 2013.

you beat me to it, but I'd also add that this is a 12 team NL. It was a somewhat unusual auction for us as it was the most disciplined one our league has ever seen, I guess things change when you lose the doormats and (most of the) degenerate drunks. The Dane was one of three new owners we added last year.
