  • Harper/ Gamel/Belt

I have room for 2 of these... which would you keep for this year only. I am not relying on any of them, more lottery tickets. I have depth at 1B (but Gamel is also eligible at 3rd)... which 2 to keep? Redraft league... thanks

Gamel and Belt. I really don't see Harper coming up until mid-season at best, unless he's tearing up AAA so much they can't ignore him.

Well, Harper seems like the ultimate lottery ticket to me. Sure, he might not get called up but his manager likes him and if he gets off to a hot start, pressure will build to call him up. I'd hold onto him and Belt.

Remember last year when Belt was the "Lottery Ticket"? Everyone had him hitting .300 with 20+ homers...and look how he ended up. Now he's a post hype sleeper that's forcing his way onto the team.

Harper may end up being the re-incarnation of Babe Ruth, but rookies generally struggle for a while, especially someone as young as Harper is...

This statement pretty much sums it up. The OP said he's looking for a lottery ticket and you're comparing the guy to Babe Ruth but saying to keep Gamel instead, I don't understand.

He's saying that Harper might have Ruth's career. But his first year, he'lll put up stats more like my aunt Ruth. Many HOFers were horrid their first year in the majors, especially when they are still teenagers.

I love Harper, and I'd keep him as my lottery ticket in my format, which is a H2H points format, because he could figure it out and have a hot few weeks to end the season, which matters most. But I don't think he plays more than 1/3 of the season, and half of that will probably be adjusting to major league pitching, so if you are looking for overall production, for this year only, even as a lottery ticket, the odds are just so long, it is smarter to look elsewhere. Still, I also bought a megamillion lottery ticket, so I clearly don't care about long odds, so I may even keep Harper knowing he is the longest shot of the three to do anything of value this year.

That's my dilemma, and thanks for the lively chatter. Yes, I am in a HTH points league also... Harper is the exciting one I suppose, but I am looking for this year value only - so level heads would lean Gamel/Belt... Unfortunately I think these 3 are tricky because their ability is in direct contrast to their playing in 2012. Gamel has a starting job, Belt is close but no room (Huff grrr), and Harper in the minors for seasoning... I am willing to be convinced otherwise though

                What he said.

The reason to keep Gamel this year is that the Brewers are going to give him every chance to succeed, or fail. And a guy who can add 20 HR's and 75 plus RBI's to your numbers can indeed be a lottery ticket that makes the difference between winning, and being an also ran. Same with thing Belt...we know that Harper is going to be in the minors, and for more than 2 months. That whole Super 2 thing
