  • Anyone going to auction old school?

I am thinking about going back to pencil and paper for this weekends auctions.

I have used the computer the last several years and I am not sure if it is an advantage when in the thick of things.

I haven't made up my mind yet but want to do so by tonight.

I would if I could, but as commish I need to track rosters. I do keep my own lists on paper.

Best of both worlds... Paper grid for tiers (easy to eyeball), computer allows easy search for player name/value. Of course, our auction is online in the first place, so it isn't really a choice!

Our auction does not allow electronic devices both AL and NL auctions.

our auction is traditionally held in a sportsbook, so, computers are frowned upon....
personally i wouldnt have it any other way. a few lists, a full league roster grid to fill in along the way, a sheet to scribble last minute/updated strategies/calculations on, and i'm good to go!
One league, 28 years, 9 championships. AL 4X4

          Current Lineup:

          Ohoppe 2 Jeffers 5 JRamirez 39 Vaughn 16 WFranco 15 Semien 26 Lowe 5 Rengifo 6 R Lewis 10 Alvarez 39 Carpenter 10 P Lopez 6 G Rodriguez 5 Ragans 5 Holmes 10 JDuran 10

Ppaper and pencil is all I use at my auctions. I think you can get to bogged down while using a computer...having all I need on two pieces of paper (double sided) keeps it simple. Make sure you have a pencil sharpener and a good eraser as well...good luck

Electronic devices are not allowed at our auction. We have one computer to track the rosters in excel that anyone can look at. After every round or two, we review the available dollars of each team.

That is how I did it for 16 or 17 years.

Both by AL and NL leagues are 12 team keepers. 23 man rosters (auction) and 17 round reserve using a draft order. That means 480 names for each league.

I am thinking tiers for the 23 man side of it and alphabetize for the rest with my # rating next to them.

I have never used anything other than paper and pen.

                      always pen and paper

                      - 3 sheets with 4 teams on each, fill in as players are purchased...keep a running tab of available positions and money
                      - 1 sheet with all available players broken down by position

Wouldn't do it any other way.

I use a mix. We don't allow internet access during the auction anyway. My lists are printed, but I track the players I have gotten (and other teams) on an old RotoJunkie Excel spreadsheet circa 2002 or so.

Amen. There is no "coolness" factor to not using a computer. Use it if it helps; don't if it doesn't.

What's your point? It's very simple to keep track of players with a pen and paper. And at my auction we have all of the teams on poster board taped to the wall so everyone can see every other teams roster and money left to spend. Actually a computer is more work.
