  • Perfect storm in my NL only league. Need some thoughts?

NL only 5x5 ultra keeper. 12 team. $260 budget. 23 man roster. 17 man reserve. Can keep 15 Plus 3 rookies or 12 plus 6 rookies. Rookies are no charge.

The following offense will be available in the auction:

    Kemp, Upton, Tulo, Votto.

Then we are dropping to Quentin and McCann.

    Then Werth Cuddyer and Melky.

Thats it! Next would be Soto.

One guy is going in with $169 and one is going in with $164. Then $127 and $90. The rest will have somewhere between 60 and 40.

My plan was to go in with 13 keepers with $44 to spend on 10 slots. This was keeping a $34 Howard.

With Howard's recent set back I am thinking about throwing him back.

I made a trade during the season to get a $51 Hanley Ramirez with the plans to throw him back.

Now I am wondering if maybe I should drop Howard and keep Ramirez? Borderline insane?

I still have $27 to spend on 10 slots?

Hmmm...now I see it in writing and it seems like a bad idea. I think I am too close to the situation to see it clearly.

I spent too much time typing this to delete. I will post it for kicks.

Even with that group, I'd throw HanRam back in for $51 and Howard at $34. I'd rather have the $78 with one chance to go insane on a better player like a Votto or Kemp.
I'm just here for the baseball.

      Thanks Chance.

This is not an argument, just more info. I think Kemp goes $65 and Votto $60. Upton $55 plus and Tulo right there. I am not sure Tulo and Votto will be better than HanRam this year?

        I think they will be.....

If you think you can get Tulo for $55 then toss Hanley back and draft Tulo. I think I'd rather have Hanley at $51 than Votto at $60. But here's the catch, if Hanley is drafted before Tulo I could see Tulo going high $50s or even $60 cause an owner or two will be pissed they didn't get Hanley and will overpay because they are scared of the big drop off at SS (assuming Reyes and Castro are being kept).

(Oddly enough, last year in my NL only Tulo went for $51 and Hanley for $55).
I'm unconsoled I'm lonely, I am so much better than I used to be.

Good point on Tulo. I will have to take a harder look at him. I have Hanley ahead of him.

Reyes is being kept at $39, Castro was drafted as a rookie and is being kept at $15 for this year or maybe $20 for the next two.

I have Rollins $30 in the last year of his contract so I do not really need ss, but want to get as many stats as I can.

Throwing Howard in gives me only a $3 Helton at 1B/Cr. I doubt Howard goes cheaper than $34. Would rather spend the money on Tulo or Hanley than Votto. I would love to have Kemp. I just have to draw the line somewhere and $13 for 10 is pushing it even for me.

What is your inflation? What kind of pitching is available?

Keeping Hanley at $51 sounds like a bad idea and keeping Howard (a lock to miss at least the first month) at $34 is ridiculous.

I think Tulo has a better year than Hanley and thus would rather have him.

Considering the fact that you have Rollins I'd really consider going hard after Votto with the money you save by not keeping Howard and Hanley. You can spend $25 on the next best middle infield after you spend $60 on Votto.

What does the rest of your keeper list look like?

I am having a hard time with the inflation this year. Too many good keeps. Too much money too few Offensive studs.

Pitching has been undervalued in this league until last year where Halladay went $44 breaking the leagues $40 barrier for the first time.

There will be some very good pitchers back in the auction. Just not enough to take pressure off of the offense. Honestly, players should never hit $50 or more, but there will be at least 4 this year.

I had Howard factored in and not Hanley. I was for sure throwing him back in. I had $44 dollars keeping Howard. If I keep Hanley I have $27 for 12 positions If I throw them both back I will have $78 for 13 positions.

I have no trouble with a $1 catcher, $1 pitcher, and $1 UT. That gives me $75 for 10 or $66 for one player with 9 more $1 players.

I had a big trade off last year giving up cheap guys and rookies.

Oh wow, you are doing your auction before the auction begins. Are you gonna bring a book to read before the dollar days? I really want to see this keeper list.

I'm a lot more confident in Tulo and Votto than HanRam. That being said, if you're sure your big four above are going to cost $235 combined, that's going to leave you and maybe one other person with some serious cash when HanRam and Howard come up, not to mention Quentin, McCann, and Cuddyer (who I really like in Coors this year).

Send them both back and go all in on Votto. I think he's a universal top 3 pick next year.
