  • No thread about the Jose Molina signing??? What's wrong with you people??!!

In all seriousness, KevinSeitzer wrote an article on receiving abilities of catchers and Molina was top on on the list with runs saved by his framing ability. Combine that knowledge with something like this

and it is worth noting as you put together your draft day notes for 2012.

framing does not equal hitting. if there were a defensive category in rotisserie/fantasy/H2H, sure...

I think Jason means it is worth keeping in mind for Rays pitchers.

my guess is that the return is marginal, for pitchers, for rotisserie purposes. i'd have to do the analysis myself, but my gut tells me that the true return on pitching value for a given catcher is marginal. if you can demonstrate otherwise i'm happy to agree, but my guess is that framing of catchers has only a small effect on K, WHIP, ERA, or other pitching categories.

i'd never recommend picking up pitchers based on their catcher. it's a second order effect...

My quick back-of-the-envelope calculations say that if Molina played 120 games for the Rays, it would be an improvement of about 0.15 on their pitchers' ERA.

I don't know if the Rays intend him to be the starter or to back up Jaso.

It might be worth noting if he becomes "personal catcher" to anyone on the staff.

so, yeah, marginal. 1-2 earned runs per pitcher over a season. i'd have to run numbers myself, but a .15 ERA drop might be worth, what, $1-ish (depending on 4x4 or 5x5)?

Maddon has said something about a 100/62 game split. Jaso is brutal back there and the pitchers preferred throwing to Shoppach the last two seasons. Jaso punches at balls, can't throw anyone out, and it not good blocker (based on my eye test)
