  • Uh, Would'ya Believe Leo Nunez??

According to the Associated Press, Leo Nunez was sent back to the Dominican Republic this week because he was found to have been using a fake name.
Nunez was placed on the restricted list Thursday and is not expected to return to the major leagues this season. According go the AP's sources, the right-hander's real name is Juan Carlos Oviedo and he's actually a year older than his listed age of 28. The Marlins have reportedly known about the issue for several months, but it's not yet clear how they plan to resolve it.

Ugueth Urbina had the real Leo Nunez killed so that Oviedo could assume his identity.
"There is involved in this struggle the question whether your children and my children shall enjoy the privileges we have enjoyed. I say this in order to impress upon you, if you are not already so impressed, that no small matter should divert us from our great purpose. "

And before that, he was known as Danny Almonte.

He's 28... at this point does it really matter if he's really 29?

Bob- I'm not exactly sure it would ROCK as you say it Byron.. it may be cool, by typical text book descriptions. Your opinion of this is shallow and poorly constructed, but allow me to re-craft your initial thought into something tangable.

If Nunez/Oviedo did in fact knowingly lie on immigration application should he not be banned from entering the United States in the future? Entering the United States under a false identity seems like a serious matter.

Yes, this could be a serious longterm issue for "Leo."

A few points on the Nunez situation per MLBTraderumors:

MLB.com's Peter Gammons reports (on Twitter) that two teams trying to trade for Marlins closer Leo Nunez at the deadline were told no. "Now I know why," said the GM of one of those teams, referring to Nunez's identity scandal. "I admire Larry Beinfest for doing what he did."
Meanwhile, Clark Spencer of The Miami Herald reports that Nunez came clean about his identity because it was his dying father's last request.
Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!

Yes, A Dying Marlins Fan's Last Request....

Leo Nunez will not face criminal charges in the Dominican Republic for falsifying his identity.
Nunez, whose real name is Juan Carlos Oviedo, revealed the case of fraud last week at the final request of his dying father. Because he came forward with the information and because he has cooperated with the investigation, the Dominican authorities have decided to take it easy on him. Whether the United States or Major League Baseball will try to prevent him from continuing his baseball career is a different story. But he's crossed one major hurdle.
