  • Mike Flanagan found dead

    He was 59
After former Broncos quarterback Brian Griese sprained his ankle and said he was tripped on the stairs of his home by his golden retriever, Bella: “The dog stood up on his hind legs and gave him a push? You might want to get rid of that dog, or put him in the circus, one of the two.”

What was initially a sad story has taken a tragic turn, as WBAL-TV in Baltimore reports former Orioles pitcher Mike Flanagan took his own life Wednesday because of the Orioles' recent troubles on the field.

The report said sources told them Flangan was "despondent over what he considered a false perception from a community he loved of his role in the team's prolonged failure," WBAL-TV sports director Gerry Sandusky said.

Flanagan, 59, won the Cy Young Award in 1979 and was a member of the Orioles' 1983 World Series championship team. In parts of 18 seasons, Flanagan went 167-143 with a 3.90 ERA. He also pitched for the Blue Jays from 1987-90. In 1979 he went 23-9 with a 3.08 ERA.

      wow ... tragic story.
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

Too bad. NH native and a good guy.

Lots of great tributes going up on the Orioles Hangout board.
