  • Reyes hurt again?

Jose Reyes left Sunday's game in the second inning with an undisclosed injury.
Reyes didn't suffer any obvious injury early on in the game, but he was pinch-hit for by Willie Harris in the bottom of the second inning. We'll pass along word of his status as soon as more information becomes available. Source: Adam Rubin on Twitter Aug. 7 - 1:55 pm et

Beat tweets now saying it's his left hamstring.

UPDATE: Reyes to get an MRI later. Yikes.

    UPDATE:

Mets GM Sandy Alderson says Jose Reyes has a mild pull of the left hamstring. They'll wait a few days before deciding on the DL.

    ...........

Thought this would draw more replies, but I guess his owners are hiding under a table and if your rival owner has him, you are at champagne.com looking at good bubbly.

Not that he might not be back in a few days, but this is the Mets we're talking about so...

same injury as last time so I'm prepared to bench him for the upcoming week. Hardy is my MI and normally would slide over to SS in my lineup but he's questionable also and with neither on the DL yet I really cant pick up a replacement. Sigh.

        Rotoworld:
Mets GM Sandy Alderson acknowledged Monday that Jose Reyes (hamstring) could miss another 2-3 weeks.
Reyes spent a little over two weeks on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring in July and aggravated the injury on Sunday. Ruben Tejada has already been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to provide depth on the middle infield. Reyes, an impending free agent, is batting .336 with an .884 OPS and 34 stolen bases.

Stupid stupid stupid of the Mets not to trade him while he had so much value. I give them a roughly 15% chance of re-signing him in the off-season, and it's not like dealing him off would have changed that percentage all that much. He's going to take money from the highest bidder this time -- I have no doubt about it. If the Mets knew all along that they would bid high for his services, trading him off for prospects and then giving him that offer in the off-season as a free agent is completely within the realm of workability. I hope they enjoy their draft picks and waiting on the draftees for 4+ years from right now to when they're actually useful to the organization.

So does yet another injury mean that Wilpon is right and Reyes won't get "Carl Crawford money"?

Honestly, I thought he was right all along (at least about Reyes' talent and injury history). People have too short of memory spans in sports -- especially GM's where contracts are concerned. Reyes' injury history suggested that he was injury prone. One very very good half-season of play should not have changed anyone's thoughts on that, but apparently it did. Silliness.

Yes, but I'm not talking about "shouldn't get," I'm talking about "won't get."

The fact of the matter is the Mets were left in a position where they were pretty much forced to not trade Reyes, due to the fact he was having an MVP-caliber season. They needed to weigh the fact their fans are paying among the highest ticket prices (at face value) in the league to watch a team that many knew wouldn't compete for a playoff spot....so the fans were rewarded with Reyes' stellar play. The tradeoff was the Mets would get draft picks rather than prospects in return for making their [remaining] fans happy.

If the Mets had traded Reyes away and he helped another NL team win a WS title or continued his MVP run, Met fans would never have forgiven the move, just like many have not forgiven them for the '77 Seaver deal.

Alderson & co. were resigned to the fact they would not be able to deal Reyes by June.

But Seaver didn't help his new team (Cincinnati) to any titles in 1977. Like Ken Griffey Jr. more recently, his acquisition was supposed to guarantee multiple future world championships but didn't. The Reds finished behind the Dodgers in 1977 and 1978, ground out a division title in 1979 but were swept by the Pirates (!), then faded into also-ran status. Seaver was dealt for dross by bad management, but never really got any payback.
