  • Derrek Lee to PIT

I guess the Pirates really were buyers this year. Good for them.

Orioles get a single-A first baseman, Aaron Baker, in return.
In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

Better than Overbay. Which isn't saying much.

    Lyle Overbay (348 ab) .227, 7 hr, 35 rbi
    Derrek Lee (334 ab) .246, 12 hr, 41 rbi (.250, 6, 19 in July)

Hopefully, a return to the NL can boost Lee's numbers.

I think this is a good move for the Buccos. Definitely an upgrade and maybe Lee revives a little back in the NL and out of the AL East.

Yep. Too bad JC held them back by cheering for them all those years.

Overbay's last stand: a go-ahead two-run homer against the Phils.

            Promptly blown by the bullpen.

I was thinking that they would definitely put Ibanez on with a man on second and first base open since he was killing the ball all day (2 hr already). But, nooooooo they have to let him win the game with the #7 hitter on deck. Even a pinch hitter would have been preferable to Ibanez. Overall i like what Hurdle is doing but every once in awhile i have to wonder.

Gosh theyre so smart. It only took 4 months!

And the inevitable ouchie that's kept him out of the lineup all weekend. He's turned into the Scott Rolen of first basemen.

i think they should just go ahead and try to trade lee and maybe ludwick. this losing streak came a few weeks too late but we knew the wheels were coming off to some degree at some point. funny thing is, everyone thought it would be earlier. 7 straight losses at home against the cubs and padres is pathetic.

Their pitching was a mirage that has now been exposed. While we can second-guess about whether they should have been buyers in July, doing so was something that long-suffering fanbase really needed.

WOW. I just checked the standings and saw that they are 10 GB. Last time I checked it was 1. I thought there must be an error. Then I saw that they are 0-10 in their last 10. Ouch.
