  • RHD's Top 150 Roto Prospects (Mid-Season Edition)

The amateurs have been drafted and international guys have started to be signed today (I hardly know anything about any of them). And it's just past the halfway point of the MLB season, so a good time to post my latest list. Lots of changes, not only w guys becoming ineligible but lots of newly drafted guys getting on and a lot of eligibles dropping off. Also, a lot of guys that were on previous lists got back on this time.

Same rules as always: I use BA's prospect eligibility requirements, which are <=130 MLB AB or <=50 MLB IP, except that amateurs, unsigned draftees and foreign players also are eligible. As usual, this is for roto, not 'real' baseball, so pitchers are downgraded some, catchers downgraded somewhat (unless they're elite prospects and their bat will play at any position), actual closers upgraded a lot, SB guys who project to get MLB playing time get upgraded some, and guys who either currently are or project to soon be regulars can get upgraded quite a bit. Position listed is their current primary one to the best of my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong), not the one they're likely to end up at.

I was just thinking last night I hope RHD puts out an update and woke up this morning and here it is. Thanks for the timely post.

It appears the biggest addition outside of the draft picks now having teams is Carlos Martinez. It appears he is a stud in the making. What kind of attributes have you heard/read about?

Great job as usual RHD...just a question, no love for Kyle Parker?

        No. 67

I have a feeling a lot of people would like to have No. 67 on their fantasy team right now.

Nice work as always. Was a little surprised to not see A.J. Pollock anywhere considering his good year in AA and the bias towards speed you typically give. Was this a miss or do you just not like his ceiling?

Thanx as always for the response, schlesinj.

Well Martinez was right outside the top 150 at the time of my last list. Before this year, he hadnt pitched above Dominican Summer League. I knew that he had great upside, but the very low minor leage level kept him outside the top 150 before; I wanted to first see what he did in a 'regular' minor league. He hasnt disappointed this year and his stock is rising fast. His fastball sits in the mid-90's and touches the upper 90's, and some scouts say it already rates an 80 on the scouting scale. But, as you would expect, his secondary pitches need a lot of refinement.

I have my eye on Parker, as he is supposed to have big-time power potential. His season so far is good but not outstanding and he is old for his league. Not ready for the top 150 yet.

#67 is Goldschmidt. Having a great season, but I may not have him as high as some others do. I see him as a Jerry Sands type of guy: he'll have to continue to prove himself at every level. Sands tore up the minor leagues, too, but has been underwhelming so far in MLB. The reason I have him as high as I do is because it is rumored that he'll be called up soon. And he is a 'right-right' 1Bman (which Sands probably will end up being also), which gives cause for caution also.

                  RHD,

Dominguez moves from 60 to 57. Since you base your lists for fantasy...I take it you see him as a potentially better hitter than most?

Last BA comment about him that I saw was a 18-20 HR guy with no defense or speed.

After watching Ackley play the last couple of weeks, I'd definitely rank him in the Top 10 on this board. At the very least, there's no way I'd take a guy like Dee Gordon over him. Ackley's a hitting dynamo, and he's going to give fantasy owners a batting average stabilizer along with double digit speed and power. I'm in love with him, quite frankly.

I'll be very interested to see how Rendon plays out with the Nats after getting passed up by five teams in the draft. I still think he's going to be a stud hitter (as, it appears, you do, too, rhd), and he's going to make those teams look very silly if he does actually become the hitter that many of us think he can be.

I could see Starling ranking quite high for the next 6 to 9 months on lists like this until people see him play in Low-A ball. Then, I imagine, he's going to fall for a couple of years until he puts his stuff together. We all have short memories about talent levels (case in point: Mike Moustakas), and when they don't produce quickly, we tend to cast them aside. Starling will be an interesting case study in our patience for prospect ascendance.

Pretty good list. Comments on a few guys that I keep tabs on due to them being on one of my dynasty teams. I'm surprised by the Hamilton and Puello rankings. Both guys have taken a step back this year in their development. They are both young and have time. Hamilton has ton's of speed, but his striking out a ton in A+ ball.

Skaggs has made a big jump in your rankings, but he still seems low at #80. He is only 19 years old and is dominating A+ ball. I would think a promotion to AA is in his near future and I feel like he is a top 50 prospect.

Hey, I wanted to first say I am happy to see Oscar Taveras ranked. This is the first list I have seen him in the top 100 and while it may seem aggressive to some I fully support it. I do think Profar is too low as he plays a premium position fantasy wise and he is doing quite well (taking walks, hitting for some power) for an 18 year old in A ball. I see Profar as a top 20 guy, but either way I appreciate your work and the list.

Thanx for the rsponse, Big Tymer. Sorry I'm just now responding today, but for some reason the website wouldnt let me post any more last night.

Pollock is currently #199 on my list. He's having a pretty good season so far but not outstanding. He supposedly has significant upside, so I have my eye on him. But does he really project to get a lot of SBs? His BA scouting report says he has slightly above average speed.

He has 21 SBs at AA (Southern League - LINK) and I'm pretty sure the speed is legit. He missed 2010 with an injury but I believe he had a very nice AFL performance as well. Not a top-100 guy right now but thought he should at least be in consideration for top-150 is all.
