  • RHD's Latest Top 150 Roto Prospects ("Pre-BA Top 100" Edition)

BA is posting their Top 100 list later this week so I wanted to post my updated list before they did theirs. Previous list is from 10/8/22. 20 new names.

The usual litany: I generally follow BA's prospect eligibility requirements, which are <=130 MLB AB or <=50 MLB IP. Unlike BA tho, amateurs, unsigned draftees and foreign players are eligible. Also, while BA has a different IP limit for relievers (30 IP?), relievers are eligible as long as they dont have >50 IP. As usual, this is for roto, not 'real' baseball, so pitchers are downgraded some, catchers downgraded somewhat (unless they're elite prospects and their bat will play at any position), actual closers are upgraded a lot, SB guys who project to get playing time get upgraded some, and guys who either currently are or project to soon be regulars can get upgraded quite a bit. Position listed is their current primary one to the best of my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong), not the one they're likely to end up at.

Awesome as always rhd. I only really know Marlins guys and I'd say it is pretty interesting that Watson didnt fall totally off the list. Also, all I hear is how good Jake Eder and Dax Fulton are. I see Fulton fell off the list. How close was Eder?

Eder - already 24 and coming off TJ, might be a sneaky play but doesnt feel like a top 150 guy.

Thanks for the update! Curious about Gabriel Gonzalez. How far did he fall for you and why? He seems to have a lot of upside.
Also, I see only Lesko and Porter cracked the list from fypd arms. How close were Rocker and Horton? Rocker carries huge risk and I see a lot of folks down on him, but he does have the advantages of being really close to ready and still flashing great stuff, so I am having difficulty on ranking where he should be taken in a fypd. A lot of folks seem to not be high on Horton, I imagine because of his very short track record as a starter, but he sure did look good in the SSS at the end of the season. Are these two the next two fypd arms for you, or is Barreria or someone else ahead of them?

          Thanx for the response, Pauly.
Fulton didnt appear to receive enough love from the prospect mavens, altho BA's report indicated they are encouraged w what he has showed so far coming back from his injury. He's currently #197. Eder still hasnt come back from his injury altho he's supposed to be ready for ST. I guess everyone is waiting to see how he is now after he returns. He's currently #239.
BTW, BA just posted their new Top 100 list, so I posted my list just in time.

              Thanx for the repsonse, SM.
I was surprised that BA's report on Gonzalez wasnt more positive than it was. They said he has good exit velocities and doesnt swing and miss much but also chases too many pitches out of the zone for weak contact and profiles as a slightly below-average hitter who's limited to a corner OF spot. He's currently #184. Rocker ranked only #10 on BA's Rangers list, altho it was a strong top 10. They list him as being a possible future closer so there's questions whether he'll stick as a SP. He's #190. Horton's report says he could be a mid-rotation SP if he refines a 3rd pitch. He's #238. Barreira is #276. The next FYPD SP on my list after Rocker actually is Cooper Hjerpe, who is at # 202.

I notice Jose Rodriguez (SS CWS) fell off the list from #146. Why, and how far did he fall?

I've been a big Rodriguez fan since last offseason. 104 games at AA as a 21 year old, hitting 11 HR, 40 SB (10 CS). That's damn impressive to me, especially given a 55 run grade, pacing out to 60 SB.

But the biggest things to notice are the power trend, and the K and BB rates. 13.6 K% and his highest yet BB rate (7.9%) are very encouraging. The power trend... well, he started the year pretty slappy, no real HR power (1 HR through first 86 games), though lots of doubles. But he finished with 10 HR in his final 18 games!

Seems like he figured something out in terms of HR power, and to pair that with good hitting ability, very strong K and BB rates, and impressive age to level, I think he's criminally under-rated all over the place. Could be a very solid power-speed guy. I like his upside more than Bryan Ramos (3B CWS), owning both in dynasty. Rodriguez is 10 months older than Ramos, but played 1 level ahead of him. Ramos produced a 120 wRC+ to Rodriguez's 103, but Ramos ended the season on the struggle bus in AA (21 games, 70 wRC+) watching Rodriguez murder baseballs.

Thanks for another fun list, rhd!
Larry David was once being heckled, long before any success. Heckler says "I'm taking my dog over to fuck your mother, weekly." Larry responds "I hate to tell you this, but your dog isn't liking it."

                    Thanx for the response, TW.

Rodriguez fell victim to the numbers game and got squeezed off. He's still not far away at #164. Like you, I've been impressed w Rodriguez' stats: solid overall numbers, good plate discipline great SB numbers all while being young for his league. He looked like a guy that should be on the list, so I put him on. I was surprised that scouts are not as impressed w him. BA's report says he profiles as a utility IFer, altho he has made improvements both offensively and defensively. It said that despite the SBs, he's only an average runner and that he has a free-swinging, aggressive approach, so apparently he's just been good at making contact so far. So in deference to the scouts, I moved him off. I also like having players whose stats jump out at me appear on the list at least for a short time, which is why you often see guys jump on and then immediately off again based on what their scouting reports say.

As I've said before, the problem w a top 150 list is that only 150 players will fit on it. If I did an "Honorable Mentions" list, Rodriguez probably would be on it.

I have only glanced at it and I can tell people will be pissed at me for picking up Gunnar and Elly last summer. I am still mystified that Gunnar was still available after the All-Star break.

I am always interested in your fast risers. What are the chances that Munetaka Murakami is in MLB any time soon? Anyone with more than 30 HR before his 20th birthday deserves attention.

Thanx for the response, onejayhawk. Murakami now is supposed to be eligible to be posted after the 2025 season. If he had to wait for his free agency, he would have had to wait until at least the 2027 offseason, which is why I moved him up. I dont plan on drafting him this year, but I do next year because he will have been in my minor league system only 2 years before he would be in MLB. I am comfortable tying up a slot for this amount of time. He looks like he could be a true MLB star-level player, not just a solid regular. Also note that Jung-Hoo Lee, the best hitter in Korea, is just 1 spot below Murakami. He now is supposed to come to MLB in 2024.</p>

Thanks for the new list RHD. Can you tell me your reason for the large drop on Brooks Lee? He did pretty well in his first year in the minors playing in rookie ball, A and AA and hit over .300.
Is it because the Twins brought back Correa?

Not speaking for RHD, but I have noticed that Lee is the most divisive FYPD player in the pool. Some respected sources have him as a top 30ish prospect, and others have him in the back end of the top 100, as is the case with Fantrax. I don't really get the hate. Those that do not like him think he doesn't have loud tools and he isn't super flashy. Those that like him point to his hit tool with grades as a 60-65. I am a sucker for the hit tool, but again, there are a lot of folks that do not see Lee as having a high enough ceiling to rank high, and are attracted to the upside of some risker guys. I get being attracted to upside, but not the Lee hate. His scouting grades are all above average and his performance has backed it up. For me, he ranks as the 7th guy in a FYPD, and RHD's new rank is a good reflection of his overall talent/profile (which is to say, I too am in the middle, but close to those that like him than those that don't). I think he is similar to Gavin Cross and Zach Neto who rank just after him for me in that all three are very good across the board guys who seem as likely as any FYPD players to make it to the majors and be solid regulars.

I like that RHD has them all clustered together. I have not seen that close a grouping before, but I agree with it and the order of it on this list. Collier breaking up the trio is a little odd to me, because he is a different type of player, with more risk and upside, so for me, I have him just above Lee, but I could easily see him just below all three. I prefer the trio of safer options, but my league is a 14 team mixed league that rightly values upside more, so as a trade asset, I have Collier just above them.
