Please rank these NL pitchers for 23 and beyond

10 team NL 5x5. $340 cap.

I am considering dumping and have the following pitching targets. Would appreciate ranking and views. All are in 1st year of 3 year contract

Dustin May $11
McKinsey Gore $3
Roansy Contreras $3

Interesting comparison. At this point, I'd rank them Gore, May, Contreras. By the end of the season, if May shows full health and promise, I might move him above Gore, depending on how Gore finishes, but probably not, because of the price difference. I think Roansy has solid potential, but not that of the other two, and the Bucs have a tendency of ruining promising arms, at least until they trade them (sorry to all Bucs fans). Gore has shown what he can be when 100% dialed in, but I suspect his control will keep coming and going, at least over the next year or two. But he will have great runs, and is healthy. May has not shown what he will be post-injury yet.

I'd need to see the high K rates across more than 23 innings before believing that's who May is, and an injured pitcher is not a good asset especially for $8 more than the other 2.

May coming off TJ and $11 is a distant distant distant third. Gore for sure and im not sure what more Contreras has to do to get some props around here. He has been consistent all season without blowups.

Every league (and team manager) has its own tendencies. In keeper leagues, I prefer my keepers to come with less hope and speculation, especially pitching. That is to say, without knowing what's available, none of these guys pique my keeper interest. These are the type of arms you can speculate on during the auction, you don't need to carry them into the festivities. I want a more solid keeper foundation, so that I can take chances if needed and as dictated during the bidding.

I like the overall risk averse strategy for keepers, and, of course, it depends on how many keeper spots there are (if there are only 3-5 keepers per team, Gore probably shouldn't be one of them, but my sense is most keeper leagues keep more players), but I am surprised you don't think Gore is a good keeper option at $3 in an NL only league with a $340 cap. That is a telling early 2023 take on Gore. Do you think he might do anything in the second half to change your mind, or is your read that he just isn't all that good? He sure looked like the top prospect he was for a little stretch there. Such potential is enticing. I imagine if one did not want to keep the risky young arm, some league mates would give something good for him.

Maybe I'm misreading, but it reads to me like FBP is building for next season and targeting one of those three pitchers. My post suggests to focus on different keepers.

The main reason - and the $340 cap plays into it (in a weird way) - is opportunity cost. I have 9 chances to draft a pitcher. Given, I may need to accept some risk with one of those spots, but I prefer not to go into the auction in that manner.

That said, Gore could absolutely earn keeper status over the next three months. Plus, if there is a reserve list, I could see freezing Gore and reserving him until he displays plug and play status. With only 10 teams, there will be some pitching available in the reserve rounds to keep the active spot warm.

To put it in to perspective any decent pitcher will go mid teens plus. Gore fits here and has potential for much more. I would be trading Wheeler who is is at 32. We have 10 keepers. The pitchers I named weren’t targets per se. They were all that were being offered. 4 out of 10 teams have dumped and there are only 3 teams really in contention and my league is very difficult to getting trades done. No market to speak of. Gore in my view is the best of the bunch and I was looking to validate/challenge my conclusion.
