Well, the sides seem to be meeting a lot now (at least 2x/day for the last while). So that's something, I guess.

With just a couple of days to go, they’ve finally agreed on the Draft Lottery. Yay!

Oh, and spring training games have now been cancelled through March 8.

Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports that the Major League Baseball Players Association is so furious with how Saturday's negotiations with Major League Baseball went that they're considering walking away from the table.

At this point, it honestly seems like the only thing that they can do. The MLBPA made what they believed to be an actual substantive offer after the first bargaining session on Saturday, and the owners completely rejected it and weren't willing to budge an inch. Their response was to move $1 million in year two of the CBT while reiterating the fact that they want to shorten the window to unilaterally implement on-field changes to 45 days or notice instead of the current one year timeframe. The owners clearly aren't negotiating in good faith here. It's going to take a miracle for the regular season to start on March 31.

Good. Seems like things are not going well, obviously, but at least if they keep coming to the table there's a modicum of hope.

It's only going to get worse from here.

There's no way they strike a deal by Monday, which means the season will be delayed, making the already-clownish Manfraud look even worse. Then he will declare that players won't be paid for games missed, and the MLBPA will retaliate by rejecting the expanded playoffs. The ire will then spill into the public as they both point fingers with angry statements, and both sides will then go into lockdown mode for over a week, causing even more games to be lost. Then we're back to square one and have yet another argument to rectify -- and this one will rise to the top of most important -- this of players not setting foot on the field until they're paid in full for games lost.

I didn't think it was possible just a year and a half after they destroyed the 2020 season, but these two groups of total dysfunctional idiots have managed to almost certainly destroy another season.

I would say it's 50/50 that the season doesn't start before May 1st, and Manfraud goes down as the worst commissioner in the history of organized sports.

This is not really a “both sides” thing. The owners don’t appear to be operating in good faith, so what would you expect that the players should do?

If that is the case, and the MLBPA sees no recourse, they need to regain the upper hand which could only be by walking away for a long time. Let the season hang in the balance. Let the teams be on the hook for reimbursing the TV networks for a lost year of a deal.

BTW, it should be noted that the MLBPA came down dramatically in their ask for arbitration, moving from 75% to 45% of Super Two players. MLB is not budging off 22%. Although 22% to 45% seems like a big gap, it amounts to only 15 to 18 players in total.

Apparently MLB cannot unilaterally cancel games. They need MLBPA approval to do so, which they almost certainly will not give. Manfraud was able to do so in ‘20 because they had agreed to a special deal which allowed him to implement changes as he saw fit for that season only.

So there is hope.
