Then, you can buy him out, but you lose the keeper spot, you pay 100% of his next year's salary, and 50% of all other years on the contract. If I were in a league like yours where you do not lose the keeper spot and only have to pay $5 to dump a bad contract, it takes a ton of the risk out of extending pitchers. I would definitely give another year to Hendriks and Lamet. I like McCullers at $6 this year, so I'd still just ride that out with him.
So many extensions for a team that is going for it this year though. Even without the extension penalties.

Yeah, but it is an 18 team league with a large pool of money and lots of inflation. All these guys are great values. All of the ones we are talking about extending can be traded for more value by extending them than the savings you get by not extending. Assuming Yaz does not tank, for instance, in my league, I'd ride him for half the year and look to trade him for an expensive or expiring Springer or Marte or someone of the ilk. I would not be able to trade up if I just kept Yaz at 2.

Good in theory, rarely plays out that way for me though. In my experience the dumping team wants a prospect or an A contract over a mid tier player who will be on Z next year.

This is pretty much how I look at it. Lock in value and don't worry too much about 5 bucks as long as it is likely they will still be underpriced and potential keepers or trade pieces

This is true for me as well, mostly. I couple of owners value the proven, cheap major league with one year left, but most want the high ceiling prospects. So, my strategy is to load up on valuable major leaguers in season and if I cannot trade them for what I want, I trade my prospects. But then in the offseason, when everyone realizes their minors are full but they need keepers, I trade my extra keepers back for prospects, and the cycle continues. Either way, a $7 Yaz will have value to someone, eventually, and I think the return will be more than $5.

There might be situations in which I'd extend a closer but he'd have to be young, dominant, never been injured, strikingly handsome, great personality, and loves long walks on the beach and candlelit dinners.

in truth it wasn't really applicable, but it is a great quote
