I went to the store today and it looks like pretty much all the mags are out now, even the newly rebranded Sporting Edge (Rotoworld). But my favorite is FBG, and I cannot find it or find any word of it. Anyone know when it is coming out?

It's not. Peter Kreutzer is putting together a bit of an e-book instead this year.

Oh wow, that really sucks. It was a great mag. I continue to not comprehend how much more popular fantasy football is than fantasy baseball. It is a shame our hobby cannot properly support more great baseball folks. #baseballisbetter.

ETA: the link's wording suggest it might come back post pandemic. I hope so. In the mean time, I'm thankful Peter is offering the e-mag option.

It wasn't Peter's choice. Magazine's run on thin, if any margins and his publisher was wary of declining sales if the season was in jeopardy. Keep in mind these things get written before Thanksgiving and stuff was still up in the air. It's my understanding it's just a one year hiatus.

That is great to hear. I'm thankful he put the content up online for purchase.

I used to count the days until Street & Smith’s Baseball Annual was on newsstands. I was talking to a friend today who still buys a mag, I told him last time for me was probably 20 years ago. Sad!

One of fantasy baseball's best kept secrets is that this magazine now has a top 20 prospects ranking/blurb for all 30 teams. So, that's a total of 600 prospect write ups. This has been my favorite feature the last several years. This "non-fantasy" Street & Smith baseball issue actually has better prospect coverage than their "fantasy" baseball issue, which is a rebranding of the former Sporting News fantasy baseball magazine.

Peter solicited picks and pans, but I have not yet sent him my list. If it's not too late, I'll try to do it this week. P&P is the only thing I did for The Guide over the past several years. I have a piece (with Jeff Erickson) in the Rotowire mag and did some work for Lindy's (catchers and relievers).

Seeing this reference to Alex Patton reminded me of something. A few weeks ago I got a chance to go in to my office (only the third time in 11 months now), and I did some cleaning out. Being away from your office for an extended period reminds you of how much crap you have in there that you don't really need, but you got used to it just being there so you left it.

One shelf I cleaned off had all my old hard-copy roto stuff on it, because I used to go in to my office for our auctions (better internet!).

I found these, along with a number of old Baseball Weekly pre-season issues.

                      Man, those were the days...

I did a couple of retro drafts with Alex over the summer. He's still as sharp as ever.

I still use his valuation system (from those books) when I do my own value calculations - it's mostly VORP, but a bit more detailed...

What does he do differently (more detailed)

You use your specific league players and totals in categories. Maybe I should have kept those books, with all the details, but they're now in recycling . But the algorithm generally is:
                              1. Calculate average stats for players at each position
                              2. For each player, for each team, subtract the average stats for that position, then add that specific player's stats, then recalculate standings, and see how many points were gained (or lost)
                              3. The points gained (or lost) for that player is then the average across the teams
                              4. The player's value is then the number of $ per standings point multiplied by the points gained (from 3)

That's an "average league value" if you want to think about it that way. Specific team values come by using specific team points from item (2) instead of average team points from item (3) when you do the calculation in item(4).

There are wrinkles, like making sure there aren't too many batters with positive dollar value at a specific position (if they can't be absorbed into CI, MI, or U), and things like that, but the above gives the general gist of it.

The thing I really liked was that it was tuned to each league, because it takes into account how your particular league spreads category totals. What I used to do was take the past three years from my league, and use those as category totals.
