Chris Archer (neck, shoulder) underwent surgery Tuesday to "relieve symptoms of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome."
If there is a season in 2020, Archer will not pitch. The hope is that he will be fully recovered by next spring, but this is the type of surgery that often comes with lingering issues and sometimes significant setbacks. The thoracic outlet trouble might help explain the quick fall from grace for Archer, who struggled to a career-worst 5.19 ERA over 119 2/3 innings (23 starts) last season for the Pirates and owns a combined 4.92 ERA in 172 innings since leaving Tampa Bay in mid-2018. He carries an $11 million club option (or $250,000 buyout) for 2021.
