    own picks 1, 2, 5, 6, 9 in April 2022 1st-rd farmhand draft
    won in 2017 15 07 05 04 02 93 90 84

Not since the Braves had Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz.

How did the Cubs let Maddux go?

that is a pretty cool record to share. I wonder if in another 95 years (2114!) someone will be quoting Brad Peacock's name again.

(on a side note, this made me realize that there are kids alive today who will hear Rush's 2112 played in 2112!)
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

              Any predictions?

Should be a doozy of a World Series beginning tomorrow ... it seems that Houston is the big favorite, but I think Washington has a really good chance of riding its arms ... I'm gonna say Nats in 7, with Max over Verlander in a classic.

He only won 20 once after that, in his first year with the Braves. Clearly they saw the decline coming and picked him up again in time for him to win 16 for them. I don't think what happened in between is important.

In all seriousness, two words: Scott Boras. Here's what Wikipedia says:

After consecutive 15-win seasons in 1990 and 1991, Maddux won 20 games in 1992, tied for the NL lead, and was voted his first National League Cy Young Award. Free agency was pending for Maddux, but contract talks with the Cubs became contentious and eventually ceased. Both Chicago general manager Larry Himes and Maddux's agent, Scott Boras, accused the other of failing to negotiate in good faith. The Cubs eventually decided to pursue other free agents, including José Guzmán, Dan Plesac, and Candy Maldonado. After seven seasons in Chicago, Maddux signed a five-year, $28 million deal with the Atlanta Braves.

They gave him a take it or leave it offer at the All Star break.

They believed they could get 3 pitchers for what Maddux/Boras wanted. They also over estimated his desire to play in Chicago. Evil Hines forced him to move on.

yeah, this is the best one, then.

DraftKings in NJ offering me +170 on Nationals tonight and +192 - almost 2 to 1 against - for the Series.

so I can bet $100 tonight and if Nats win I have $270 (I keep my $100 and win $170).
or $100 for Series and if Nats win I have $292 (I keep my $100 and win $192).

in other news, I am not betting $100 on a stupid sporting event!

but a modest wager seems appropriate, given the odds.

I moved to PA and had to close my Draft Kings wagering account since they're not active here yet (although PA has approved sports wagering).

there are at least a dozen legal betting apps in PA now - other than DK, it's nearly as robust as NJ.

the enticements to join are pretty rich in these early days, too - though obviously anyone who isn't sure if they should sign up for a betting app well, SHOULDN'T.

I did - for a very modest number.

the Series one I'm not hating, either. arbitrage experts might advise me on my next steps (if I had bet enough money to make it worth their while).
