  • 2k19: Andrew Heaney

Raise your hand if you knew Heaney threw 180 innings last year.

    2018 stats: 30 starts, 180 innings, 9-10, 4.15 ERA, 180 Ks, 1.20 WHIP. Good for a 9.0 K9 and a 2.25 BB9. A FIP of 3.99 and xFIP of 3.68. Decent 41.2% ground ball rate. A 1.35 HR/9 based on a 15.2% HR/FB, which isn't great, but given the way MLB is headed with all the dingers, not awful.

Fastball had a slight negative pitch value, slider a tiny bit of positive value, and changeup a big plus value. Fastballs are a mix of sinkers and cutters.

He had TJ in July 2016, and came back at the very end of 2017. So 2018 was his first full season back, and maybe there's a bit of improvement to be realized now that he's another year post-TJ.

Steamer basically projects an exact copy of 2018: 178 innings, 12-9, 3.95 ERA and 8.66 K9.

The defense behind him isn't great - yes, Simmons and Trout, but also Pujols and Bour sharing 1B. Cozart could be a plus at either 2B or 3B. Lucroy hasn't rated well in his last few seasons. Neither has Upton. Calhoun is OK.

Is there anything really exciting about Heaney or is 2018 just who he is? That still has value, but without upside he's kinda boring.

I literally traded for him last night in our 12 team AL only.

For me the exciting thing is he is a $2B contract. I can either play him out or give him a year raise to $7 for the next two years. I will probably play him out. I like the K's and the whip. The era will/should not hurt.

He is only 27 so he has room to improve.

I have him at $2 and will be happy for a 2018 repeat, which i think he is capable of. Anything else is hard to bank on, but certainly possible and welcome. He was a well regarded prospect, but was always projected to be a #4 type starter, and given his pedigree, his 2018 K rate was a nice surprise.

I agree, if he can repeat his 2018 season, he's a nice rotation filler in deep leagues at a relatively cheap price.
