  • Would you take Sano and Santana?

After back to back titles in my 14 team mixed league, my minors are in a sad state, and I put out a feeler to get Bo Bichette. The response I got was I could have him, if I took on $17 Sano and $13 Domingo Santana, both of whom are under contract for for 2019 and 2020. I'm loathe to take on bad contracts, but both players have enticing skills. I could buy them out at 100% of year 1 and 50% of year two, but would probably keep Sano, unless he is horrid this spring. It is a $400 cap, so these salaries aren't as bad as they look, although dead weight in keeper spots hurts.

He also asked I toss back a player, but if I take his two guys, I wouldn't be able to keep him anyway.

So, basically, I'm asking what folks think of these two guys. My thinking is that if either has positive value, this is a good deal for me, given the premium top prospects carry.

How much is Bo when activated?

When you say buy them out at 100% are you talking real money? How much does it cost to buy out Santana?

Bo would be $5 his first two years, then can be extended for up to 6 years.

No, it is auction money to buy out a player. I could keep Santana at $13, or buy him out at $20 auction dollars this year (13 plus 6.5 rounded up). To buy out both Sano and Santana, it would cost $45. But in season, I could easily trade Bo to a dumper for a major leaguer worth more than $45. Elite prospects are highly coveted for their cheap costs in relation to our high auction budget.

I'm not as worried about the potential buy out cost of $45 as I am the lost opportunity cost in losing two keeper spots. They two I'd have to bump are likely yadier Molina $3 (one catcher league) and Brian Boxberger $1.

I'd give it a shot...like you said, both have enticing skills, and if Sano gets his head on straight, he can be a 50 homer guy with multiple position eligibility. Or, he can be a giant turd who drives you crazy...it's literally a coin flip at this point, but a decent one IMO.

So, if I do it, I should not buy out Sano? How about Santana? I worry about wasting a roster spot all year on a guy who is completely unplayable in a 14 team mixed. Unless he gets traded, I feel like buying Domingo out would be best.

That is what I was thinking (buying our Santana), but needed to understand more of your rules. When do you have to declare the buyout?

Not till keepers are do in March. Usually two weeks prior to the auction.

I ended up having to give Ottavino at $5 and Rizzo at a price I would not have kept him at. He tossed back Nick Gordon and Anthony Alford, neither of whom do much for me, but my minors were thin.
