Dodgers make a series of surprising moves, that should still be a massive upgrade

First, they have relieved Don Mattingly, whom has acknowledged he never had the skills to manage.

Activate in dual capacity player coaches
Don Mattingly - cut James Loney
Dave Hansen - cut Juan Uribe
Davey Lopes - cut James Loney again
Manny Mota - cut Tony Gwynn & Marcus Thames
Tim Wallach - cut Casey Blake & yes, James Loney 3 strike rule!

acq via trade Mike Scioscia (player manager) - cut Dioner Navarro & Rod Barajas

MLB has rejected the deal McCourt had with Fox, which now nullifies the settlement those two dorks made regarding their divorce. The Dodgers making the 6/30 payroll is now in jeopardy. What a friggin' mess.

It is a mess. Selig wants to make sure McCourt doesn't make payroll. It actually doesn't matter what McCourt does Selig just wants him gone. Even though the deal with Fox is/was a good deal this is best for the Dodgers long term. It's too bad they are not considering Mark Cuban as a potential owner. They need a new owner who has deep pockets especially with Fielder and Pujols becoming FA. Fielder could solve a few problems for the Dodgers.

Actually, almost all experts think that the Fox deal is lousy. It way undervalues the Dodgers' TV market, but McCourt likes it because it includes around $100M up front for his divorce costs.

            There's a Web site called DodgerDivorce.com? Ha.

In any case, the article confirms what I've said before: Selig is just as responsible for this mess as anyone else, because he never should have approved McCourt as an owner in the first place. He was more interested in bringing low-spending owners into the fold than in ensuring that the team was in the hands of someone who could afford to run it. He's mostly made the right moves in order to salvage the situation, but it should never have come to this to begin with.

This is why you won't see John Middleton take over majority ownership of the Phils until Selig is gone. Middleton has raised his stake in the team to more than 40% and fancies himself the Steinbrenner of the National League. Without his influence, they would not have signed Cliff Lee.

The Dodgers have filed for bankruptcy.
After former Broncos quarterback Brian Griese sprained his ankle and said he was tripped on the stairs of his home by his golden retriever, Bella: “The dog stood up on his hind legs and gave him a push? You might want to get rid of that dog, or put him in the circus, one of the two.”

                  From Rotoworld--

"The Dodgers have filed for bankruptcy.
Frank McCourt is doing all he can to prevent Major League Baseball from taking over the Dodgers, and the bankruptcy filing might buy him a couple of days. But the fact is he cannot meet payroll, and that alone should be reason enough for Bud Selig and MLB to step in and seize control. McCourt will eventually be pushed out. It's an ugly mess with the trade deadline fast approaching.
                  Source: Richard Sandomir on Twitter"

An obvious and desperate move. MLB should find a qualified buyer THIS TIME, sell the team, and put the net proceeds (if any) in escrow, with the courts deciding which undeserving spouse gets what. It won't happen that way, what with all the lawyers involved, but that's what ought to happen.

Manny Ramirez is the largest creditor at $21m. Luckily for him (and the rest of the Dodger players), there are clauses in the CBA to pay them in the event of a bankruptcy.

In a perfect world, this would result in Manny owning the Dodgers...

Has Furcal been called up yet and who is going down?

of course - how long until he gets hurt again?

I disagree. Unlike many on this board, I actually like the overall job that Selig has done, but MLB has hosed this whole situation up pretty badly. At this point, I'd trust a bankruptcy judge to get this issue fixed faster and better than MLB can.

Hey, Lucky, can you apply for the job?
I'm just here for the baseball.

wow. Uribe has sucked. Any chance they just try to get rid of this stiff? With Furcal back, the Dodgers are better off (at least offensively) with Miles, Carroll, Furcal and Gordon dividing up the time.

He's still got two years left at $7 mil per. So, call the Angels, but otherwise don't expect much.
