  • The Edwin Diaz single season saves record watch

Time to start this thread. Diaz pitched a perfect 9th to get his 49th save tonite. The record is 62 by K-Rod in 2008. He had 7 blown saves to Diaz' 4 this yr. Mariners have 33 games left. Diaz is on a pace for 61.5.

Save #50 tonite, protecting a 1-run lead in extras. It was looking like a blown save, as he gave up hits to the 1st 2 batters, but he managed to wiggle out of trouble w/o even recording a K.

#51 tonite. 1.3 scoreless w 4 Ks but he did give up a bases-clearing 2B in the 8th to cut the lead to 1.

a great example of one of the stupidities of the SV rule. at least he had to pitch the 9th, though.
if you come in with bases loaded, 2 outs in the 9th in a 6-1 game, the tying run is on deck. that's ok, feel free to allow a grand slam, a double off the wall, and a couple of walks. if you can get that lineout, then you have a "save" in a 6-5 win. congrats!
finished 10th in this 37th yr in 11-team-only NL 5x5

        won in 2017 15 07 05 04 02 93 90 84

        SP SGray 16, TWalker 10, AWood 10, Price 3, KH Kim 2, Corbin 10
        RP Bednar 10, Bender 10, Graterol 2

And the managers seem to play right along with the rule. Most of them won't bring their closer in until that tying run gets to the on deck circle and not a batter sooner.

there cannot be more than 500 quality starting pitchers in the last century who could match this feat, on the same terms.

this is like watching a soccer player break a relegation league scoring record for goals.

Smoltz probably couldn't believe he got paid so much to make layups. this is a legit HOFer with an incredible postseason resume.

"wait, my team is up by 2 or 3 runs, ok. and if I don't give up 2 or 3 runs in ONE inning, I'm a hero? really? cool!"

same goes for Eckersley, who also shockingly was really good at this gig

I just found out that Diaz has won the relief pitcher of the month 4 out of 5 times this year. I didnt know there was such an award. But since there is, that may be some kind of record.

and you should see the participation trophy!
                        lol

starting pitching is REALLY hard, in fact it is brutal on a pitching arm.
if that's too hard, join the relief pitching version!

Rather than being health related, it is more common that a relief pitcher just wasn't GOOD enough as a starter. Most commonly they don't have enough plus pitches.
