  • Nate Jones Scoring Change Question

For those of us unlucky to have used Nate Jones on June 5th, he got battered to the tune of 4 ER in 1/3 IP. But yesterday, MLB changed one of his hits to an error, leading to all those runs becoming unearned.

I saw this news on my CBS league homepage and assumed they would change it retroactively. To confirm, I sent them an email, but they responded that no, it's past their self-imposed seven day limitation. So if you believe it should be changed, your commissioner needs to do it by going into the Commish Settings, going to Standings/Adjust Player Scoring, and then using the dropdowns to adjust accordingly.

What would your league do? It's not like this is Fantasy Football, where a late scoring change can lead to a win or a loss, but it's also not fair to get saddled with 4 ER that no longer exist because of CBS.

The first question would be what has your league been doing historically? I dont think this is the first late scoring change. CBS has that policy because this does happen at times.
Note that this is not CBS though that caused it, it is MLB taking so long to apply the change.
As for what my league would do, we have a ruling that says we do abide by the settings of the provider (i.e. CBS) when the situation is not explicitly called out in the rules.

As a commissioner, I would not want to keep up with this manually. You caught this one but what about next month if another one occurred to someone else, are you sure you'd catch it?

In my football leagues, we have a Thursday deadline, because a late scoring change can mean the difference between a win and a loss for two teams.

But in our baseball leagues, there is no rule as we never realized they didn't change it retroactively whenever it may have occurred. After all, while our lineup periods change weekly, it is a "season-long" accumulation of stats (not HTH), so why should it matter?

I've found that there have been 62 scoring changes made this year to date, but not sure if any were after 7 days.

In the general cases I can agree, but there are certainly edge cases where stat corrections can mess you up.

Last week of the season I'm setting my lineup. I'm currently in 1st in saves and 2nd place has 1 fewer save than I have no one else is within 10 of us. 2nd place has already traded away all their closers and I have 1 closer left. But I don't think I need to start him because nothing is gained by me getting saves, so I replace my closer with a starting pitcher to rack up extra Ks and Ws.

Lineups are set and then suddenly the next day CBS retroactively gives my opponent a save from a month ago.

So I should have started my closer. But it is too late.

Extreme, specific example, but the point is that you can change your strategy based on the standings. You want them to be *basically* static historically. There should not be changes from weeks ago, that information is long ago and considered canon. At least for me, that is motivation to have deadlines on stat corrections.

But even if there were a deadline for stat corrections, using your example, what if a save was supposed to be credited for the last day of the season but a change is made 4 days later?

I guess my point is, it was caught was it's still early on in the season.

A deadline allows changes but disallows extreme examples. It is already a compromise solution to an imperfect situation.
