  • Nice gesture by the Cubs, but a sad story about Ernie Banks estate:

"The Chicago Cubs are going to pay for the funeral of legendary infielder Ernie Banks after the company that handled the services filed a claim that it hadn't been paid amid a legal battle over the Hall of Famer's estate."

    • Al Rosen, the muscular third baseman who won the 1953 American League MVP and played on the last Cleveland Indians team to win the World Series, has died. He was 91.

The Indians said Rosen died Friday night. The team did not provide any other details.

Rosen played his entire career with Cleveland from 1947 to 1956. He was a member of the Indians' 1948 World Series title team -- playing only five games that season and getting one at-bat in the series win over the Boston Braves.

Yes, it should be noted that Al was the original "Hebrew Hammer." There aren't too many tribesmen left.

In theory: Joc Pederson, Ian Kinsler, Ryan Braun (ouch), among others I believe.

                        • Billy Pierce, a seven-time all-star pitcher who played in two World Series and spent most of his 18 years in the major leagues with the Chicago White Sox, died July 31 in Palos Heights, Ill. He was 88.

The cause was gallbladder cancer, said his family and the White Sox.

Mr. Pierce, a 5-foot-10 left-hander who threw exceptionally hard for his size, was one of baseball’s finest pitchers of the 1950s. He began his career in 1945 with the Detroit Tigers and pitched for the White Sox from 1949 to 1961, starting three all-star games in the mid-1950s.

He closed out his career with the San Francisco Giants. He had a career record of 211-169 with a 3.27 ERA, 1,999 strikeouts, 193 complete games and 38 shutouts.
