  • RJEL Minor League Draft...

Stars on Monday for the 18 team mixed, 5x5 OBP league. 15 minor leaguers per team kept. I'll post the current list of owned players, and each draft pick as we progress. Commentary from non league members is welcomed...the number corresponds to the round drafted...6 bucks being a 1st rounder and so on. We are NOT allowed to draft foreign born players signed after the previous season, so no Ohtani for me...

Tyler Mahle, Luiz Gohara, Zach Granite & Trevor Hildenberger (and any other rookie eligible player on an active roster who I did not catch) are also not eligible to be drafted unless they're dropped off rosters by Sunday night.

Nope, it's an OBP league, and he's a touch too aggressive for my tastes...also won't contribute much in the steals. Lewis profiles as a true 5 tool contributor.

Interesting. Career .370 OBP in the minors suggests some talent there. And proximity would be very attractive for me. I'd be surprised if he was not picked soon.

True, but that's based on having batting averages over .330, so essentially his OBP is roughly 40 points over his BA. Steamer projects his OBP this season at .310.

Lewis has show an outstanding eye for an 18 year old, and I'm in a position to wait, probably not going to compete for the title this season.

I do agree that Hays is going to be a really good player, I just couldn't justify taking him at 1.01.

I love Royce Lewis but a little shocked he went #1. Is that a little Twins bias showing?

No - its indicative of a relatively weaker 2017 draft at the top imo. This league is 18-teams with 15-man minor league rosters so by and large the pool of available players is (a) 2017 draftees and (b) 2017 pop-up prospects who were previously under the radar.

Lewis might have been an under-slot 1:1 last year but he surprised many with the bat and is pretty much a consensus top-25 prospect with 5-tool potential. Clear #1 for me this year based on who is available.

If there is, it's barely a bit. Given the list available, he's a worthy #1. I'd personally lean toward Luis Robert, but given that Horns already has a stacked minors list, going for the longer-term development is a great move.

Now, for the record, not only have I agreed with Horns again, I've even defended him. I would recommend not standing near windows this morning in case a pig flies through.

For the record, I'm fine with Lewis at 1.01. I don't think there's a clear cut number 1 this year. For historical perspective, here are the top 3 in each of the last few years:

                            2017:
                            Senzel
                            C Ray
                            Maitan

                            2016:
                            Moncada
                            Rodgers
                            Swanson

                            2015:
                            Alex Jackson
                            Rodon
                            Schwarber

                            2014:
                            Bryant
                            C Frazier
                            J Gray

                            2013:
                            Correa
                            Puig
                            Zunino

                            2012:
                            Rendon
                            Bundy
                            Bauer

                            2011:
                            Harper
                            Machado
                            Taillon

Lots of hits and misses. This is a long way of saying that we may not know if Lewis is a good number 1 pick until years from now. Or until Steve deals him and cashes in the chip.

                              2017:
                              Senzel
                              C Ray
                              Maitan

                              2016:
                              Moncada
                              Rodgers
                              Swanson

                              2015:
                              Alex Jackson
                              Rodon
                              Schwarber

                              2014:
                              Bryant
                              C Frazier

                              Correa
                              Puig
                              Zunino

                              2012:
                              Rendon
                              Bundy
                              Bauer

                              Harper
                              Machado
                              Taillon
