  • 2K18: Tim Beckham

He had an ARod-like August, .394/.417/.646, 6 HR, sandwiched between two months with and OPS below .700. Through it all, he finally played a full season, 137 G, 575 PA. Three months were from an MVP season and three were from an over-matched minor leaguer. Between the hot and cold it averaged out average, .278/.328/.454, 22 HR, better than Paul deJong.

What do we make of this very late blooming rose? Beckham will be 28 and is out of options. Baltimore is rebuilding and has nothing to lose by giving him a lot of rope. Will he be worth $5, is he endgame fodder, IS he fools gold with one great month in a lost career?

I am not a believer. Still in my only league if the bidding stopped at $4 I would easily go $5.

I doubt he keeps the job all year.

I like him, and as they say, once you own a skill it's yours. He obviously is talented. He finally got the opportunity. I like him as a late game MI.

Good example of post hype. I'm interested late game as well.

Got that one. $5 is about where people draw the line between regulars and gambles. You are coming at the last of one or the first of the other.

                Other opinions?

I am probably biased because I lucked into him last year, but I think with SS-eligibility and the strong showing, assuming he gets the full-time SS job in BAL he's worth more than $5. According to Fangraphs' calculator he earned $15 last year in an AL-only, but just over $5 in a 12-team mixed.

In that park, matching last year's numbers wouldn't be hard. But he's the 3rd best defensive shortstop on that team (Machado, Schoop). Then again, what other infielders do the Orioles have?

JJ Hardy? But he has a sure-to-be-declined $14M option for 2018, so he's a free agent. Gotta assume barring a trade the O's go with Machado/Beckham/Schoop across the infield again. Otherwise it's... Luis Sardinas? Ruben Tejada? Um no.

That's more or less the reason I like Hays. Still, skills not roles. Beckham proved he can hit. What he needs to show is if he can hit consistently.

I read somewhere that they'll consider Machado at SS for the season...he's their best defender by a mile. Maybe Beckham to 3rd then...
