  • Way too early..way, way too early..but what the heck..2018 keepers

Won my league for the 4th time in 6 years. Not a great set of keeper choices.

$300 draft day auction. Can keep up to 8 players. 13 team mixed

    C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 4OF, 2UT
    5 SP, 2 RP, 2 P
    4 Bench spots.

    C- Gattis $8
    1B - Bird $1
    1B, OF - Carlos Santana $7
    1B, OF - Matt Olson $1
    2B,3B,SS,OF - Ed Nunez $6

    SS - Amed Rosario $1
    3B - Matt Chapman $1
    OF - Eddie Rosario $1
    OF - JD Martinez $46

    SP - Kershaw $84
    SP - Ervin Santana $1
    SP - Robbie Ray $9
    SP - Pat Corbin $1
    SP - Luiz Gohara $1
    SP - Alex Cobb $4
    SP - Daniel Mengden $1

My choices in bold as of today. I have 7. Number 8 is tough. Maybe. Or maybe my 7 aren't the best.

JD as a keeper for $46 might depend on where he signs.

    Thoughts please!!

    Thanks!!

I would think oakland's matt chapman @ $1 is supposed to be protected but I don't play mixed...

If Nunez ends up somewhere as a utility guy, I’d keep Amed Rosario at $1.

I don't see a big point in keeping Bird at this time. I'd rather have a 1 buck Chapman or Santana.

Agree with this. There's some upside with Amed Rosario. Even if he doesn't break out in 2018 at least he makes a good trade chip.

You also left out C-Welington Castillo for $2. I would take him as the 8th player.

              C - Welington Castillo $2
              1B - Greg Bird $1
              1B, OF - Carlos Santana $7

I would easily add Ervin Santana to this list.

Thanks. I prefer not keeping a catcher, unless it is a no-brainer and Castillo, while solid, isnt a better choice than others. Plus he will be cheap in the auction.

Thanks. Ervin is definitely in the mix.

You dont think Bird is 35 HR guy in 2018?

As a Twins guy, do you think Ervin keeps it up?

He could be, but power is cheap and easy to find in these days of the juiced ball. I ended up with LoMo and Alonso last year in my AL only for under 6 bucks. It's just not worth it for me to chase a what if like Bird when they're so much available for so little at the position.

I think that Erv takes a step back, but an ERA of 3.75 or so and taking the ball every 5 days is pretty valuable. Decent amount of K's as well...for a buck, that's a keeper to me.

I'm curious, why do you prefer not to keep a catcher in the general sense

13 team league so no reason to keep one as once you get past the top few, i see little difference. I would rather keep other positional players who have a better chance at improving. Now if ones keeper list is poor, then maybe keeping a catcher is ok.

Would you keep Castillo if this was your team?

I think Castillo would definitely be a consideration. But more broadly, I'm not sure I agree that catchers have a smaller chance of improving. Their stats often look bad, but its the relative stats compared to what other fantasy teams have at catcher that matter.
